Tips For Communicating With Your Emotions

By Maria K. Garcia

The secret to avoiding bottling up of emotions is, knowing how to effectively communicate with them. It does not matter whether the emotions are positive or negative. However, it can be slightly challenging to establish efficient communication when one is overcome by emotions. To make certain that one's emotion-associated communication is efficient, it is important to involve a tad bit of preparation.

This article discusses into detail tips on now to effectively communicate with your feelings when overwhelmed by emotions.

Give yourself time to calm down. In a situation where you find yourself overpowered by sadness or happiness, chances are that you will be more than eager to talk to someone in regards to your feelings. Nonetheless, this is not a wise move. In order to communicate effectively with your feelings, you need to give yourself time to calm down. This is because your amplified feelings can cause you to say or do something which you may regret at a later date.

Plan your opinions. Prior to talking to someone about your feelings, it is important that you be able to comprehend yourself. Journaling your thoughts will assist you in trying to understanding these emotions. If you have a sheet of paper, jot down these feelings immediately. Since they are still fresh in your mind, it is best not to wait. Thereafter, try to explain to yourself why these emotions are overwhelming your thoughts. If these feelings are negative, try as much as possible to determine the best way to stop them.

Come up with "I" declarations. Beneath your notes, jot down numerous statements which start with "I". A lot of emphasis ought to be placed as to why you are experiencing these emotions and the triggers of these emotions. For instance, in case you are mad with someone who is close to you, begin the statement as "I feel as if I was not consulted."

Choose an appropriate timing. Prior to communication your feelings, make certain that the timing for communication these emotions is an appropriate one. Choose a secluded location and a huge chunk of time to make certain that you the opportunity to investigate your emotions rather than hurrying over your thought process.

Talk to someone about your feelings. Once you have gone through your thought process, the next step is to let them out. While expressing your feelings, try as much as possible to remain levelheaded. Use the "I" statements you wrote earlier to communicate these feelings.

Learning how to express one's emotions can greatly assist in preventing hurtful words or actions that commonly uttered or done when one is overpowered by feelings.

How to Cope With Emotions and Reduce Anxiety

By Margaret Sweet

Emotions are feelings that cause reactions. When a person feels sad, regret, guilt, shame, angry, hurt, resentful, or rejected they tend to allow these feelings to cause them to slip into depression. Such intense emotions are the leading cause of anxiety, panic attacks, and other disorders. People find it hard to cope with emotional reactions because we have lived in a world of misconceptions and for century's society and others have told people "Big boys don't cry." Alternatively, they say "Let it go" when someone is emotionally hurt, thus encouraging people to repress true hurt feelings. Repressing feelings literally means to block, limit, or internalize.

When a person represses true feelings for long periods it results to the creation of a mental disorder in most instances. People who tend to hold in anger and resentment will express anger outwardly or rely on drugs or alcohol in some instances to cope with the buried feelings. To overcome emotional conflicts we all have to learn how to express our true feelings appropriately and learn to recognize how to notice the difference between assumptions and true feelings.

How to cope with intense emotions

When you first notice that, you feel upset, take a step back and examine your thoughts. Emotions are feelings that cause a reaction when thoughts encourage feelings. For example, if you were assuming that someone is judging you, you would feel anxious as a result. The reason this reaction occurs is that the emotion or feeling is untrue. These shaky assumptions lead people to think they can read other people's minds when they cannot, so to assume people who do not even know is judging you, is making a false statement against others. Challenging the thought will help you to put the thought into a new perspective.

When we are untrue to ourselves emotional, conflicts result. I help people recognize assumptions that cause them to feel upset. To change how you think is the first step you must take to change how you react. The next step is challenging the fears.

Fear

People who live in fear struggle with handling emotional reactions well. Irrational fear resulting from assuming habits, worry and anxiety are often caused from a notion that a person is in real danger even when there is no danger present. They live in the "fight or flight" way of thinking that causes distress and panic to escalate. The key to reducing anxiety and panic is to overcome the notion you are in real danger when danger isn't present.

Emotions are feelings and causes emotional sensations when a person feels sad, happy, excited, angry, joyful, etc. by learning to accept that every one of us has real feelings, it will be easier to cope with emotions. Learn how to cope with emotions to reduce mental disorder and other problems by considering effective cognitive behavioral therapy, life skills course, mastery skills programs, and subliminal therapy.

Forgiveness for Abuse

This may seem like an odd place to mention forgiveness, but in order to know how forgiveness can clear your emotions, bring healing, and raise your vibration, you need to understand what unforgiveness or any other repressed emotion does to your energy field. Have you ever noticed how awful you feel after you’ve had an argument with someone? Regardless of who lost or won (everyone loses when anger is used to manipulate an outcome), you may continue to relive the incident and obsess over the situation instead of simply forgiving the offense and moving on. Energy attracts energy similar to itself. It does not matter what the form your anger takes—sarcasm, criticism, judgment, apathy, depression—carrying around an energetic burden of anger, fear, sadness, or vengeance lowers your vibration and attracts like energy. When you are angry with another person, you continue to send negative energy to them, and guess what? Whatever you send out, comes back to you, magnified. Even after you stuff an emotion deeply enough that you no longer feel it, it is still alive and actively destroying your aura and chakras as well as causing damage to your physical body.

When someone acts wrongly, he is actually giving you an opportunity to bless him and yourself. You need the same forgiveness you offer him. In fact, there is no way to accept forgiveness without offering it because whatever you deny others is exactly what you lack. When you deny forgiveness you will feel deprived. The only way to get rid of this kind of detrimental energy is to offer forgiveness to everyone. Here’s how according to lesson 122 in A Course in Miracles:

Begin by thinking of someone you do not like, who seems to irritate you; one you actively despise, or merely try to overlook.

Now close your eyes and see him in your mind, and look at him a while. Try to perceive some light in him somewhere; a little gleam that you have never noticed. Try to find some little spark of brightness shining through the ugly picture that you hold of him. Look at this picture until you see a light somewhere within it, for in that light his holiness shows you your savior, saved and saving, healed and whole. Now try to expand this light until it covers him and makes the picture beautiful and good. Then let him offer you the light you see in him.

Look at this changed perception for a while, and then turn your mind to someone you consider a friend. Try to transfer the light you learned to see around your former “enemy” to this friend. Let your “enemy” and friend unite in blessing you with what you have given them. Now are you one with them, and they with you. Now you have been forgiven by yourself.

Do not forget, throughout the day, the role forgiveness plays in bringing happiness to your mind.

I realize there are some abusive situations that are difficult to forgive—in fact, it is impossible for the ego to forgive anything or let go of an offense. Only by allowing Spirit to address the situation can forgiveness come forth. True forgiveness is not overlooking the “bad” in a person; it is about letting go of anything that keeps you from experiencing peace of mind. This means giving up “attack” thoughts and not taking things personally or projecting your expectations on to others. It means not seeing yourself as a victim, who has been attacked, abandoned, betrayed, misunderstood, etc. You have to release the personal thought system (ego) by recognizing your oneness with Spirit/Source and others. This is not something we can grasp intellectually. We must allow Spirit/Source into our awareness over and over until love becomes a real experience. When you are centered in Spirit, you can simply observe abusive behavior and recognize that this person is behaving that way because of something going on in his or her mind; it has nothing to do with you. You can then decide to be around this person/behavior or not. Remaining in an uncomfortable or dangerous situation is self-torture, not forgiveness. Your choice to no longer speak with this person is a miracle, not a failure! A miracle shifts your mind toward peace, away from conflict. Forgiveness and peace show up as a result of your choice to take care of yourself by avoiding an abusive person. You can’t expect the abusive person to change his ways. A miracle always occurs in your mind; therefore, a change of mind is all that is needed to bring you peace.

“To release the charge of an emotion is not the same as deleting the memory of the event,” writes Luis Angel Diaz on page 14 in his book, Memory in the Cells. “It involves liberating the trapped vital force in order to use it for growth and self-healing.”1

Empaths Feeling Emotions in Traffic

One highly sensitive person I heard from said she if she drove past a serious car accident, she would feel all the emotions that the people involved feel, including the confusion of the person who died. If there is someone in the car with her, she feels embarrassed about crying and having to answer their question, “Did you know someone in that accident?” and explain why she is crying.

Do you get these kinds of empathic “hits” when you are in traffic or driving?

Three Ways for Empaths to Identify Their Own Energy

Here are some ways to identify and distinguish your own energy from that of another person.

1. Ask. If you are feeling overwhelmed by emotions, the first thing to do is ask yourself if the feeling is yours or someone else’s. If you are angry with someone, the feeling is probably your own, but you could also be participating in the energy of the person you quarreled with. Try to resolve the situation, forgive, and let it go. If the energy is not yours, try to determine the obvious originator. Whenever we are in close proximity to another person, our energy fields overlap. For example, if you are feeling out of whack and you’ve just witnessed an accident or have been in a crowded public setting, you may have picked up the feelings of other people. If possible, move at least twenty feet away from the suspected source and notice whether you feel relief. Center yourself by concentrating on your breath—exhaling negativity and inhaling peace. Draw your aura in closer by visualizing it extending no more than two feet from your body until you get home. Then, ground yourself using the techniques discussed in Chapter 9 of Whose Stuff is This?. This can bring relief very quickly.

2. Intuition practice exercise. The word “intuition” is the noun form of the verb “to intuit,” which comes from Latin, meaning “to look in” or “to look on.” Here is an exercise to help you look in on your intuition and use it as a guidance tool when you are faced with making a decision.

Think about a situation you are currently in. Perhaps you are about to launch into a new business venture, or make a change in residence, or leave/begin a relationship. You probably have at least two choices to make: either go for it or turn away the opportunity—at least for the time being.

Take a deep breath to center your thoughts and become aware of your feelings. As you release the breath, hold the thought that you will accept the opportunity being presented to you.

Now think of the situation again and consider turning away the opportunity. Did you feel an inward shift?

Which thought made you feel peaceful, happy, or relaxed?

Which thought made you feel tense, uneasy, or agitated?

Did you notice yourself wanting to hold your breath when considering either thought?

The thought that made you feel relaxed or at ease is more than likely the choice you should make.

Fear should not be a factor in any decision you make. Feeling fear when you are considering your options could mean that you are picking up on the energy of another person—perhaps someone is urging you to make a decision that you really don’t think is best, but you are afraid of the consequences of disappointing them. Being true to yourself means making the decision that is best for you and your divine path. Once you find that feeling of contentment regarding a decision you are about to make, continue to hold that sensation and get used to how it feels. This is your instructive instinct. This is spiritual guidance or intuition that you can learn to trust and follow.

Pay attention to the feelings and impressions you receive wherever you go. You may have a feeling that you don't want to go into a certain place, or you don't want to connect with a certain person. You are wise to trust those feelings; they come to us for a reason, whether it makes rational sense or not. Intuition does not come from the rational side of our brain; it comes from a place of higher knowing that is meant to guide us and keep us safe.

3. Spend time building a relationship with yourself. The busier we get the less we are likely to take time to sit still and listen to the voice within, but this is a very important part of learning to sense your own energy and honing your intuitive skills. We may be doing something wonderful for someone else, but if we neglect taking time to renew our own energy, we put ourselves at risk of being overwhelmed. Self-healing and self-care is a wonderful gift we can offer ourselves as empathic healers. Taking a break, spending time in meditation, and relaxing are some of the best ways to get to know how your energy feels, raise your vibration, and avoid taking on other’s symptoms.

Flushing Emotions from their Hiding Places

The goal of ascension is to bring the experience of divine love into our human practice. This is what it means to embody divine master presence. When we start this reprogramming process, whatever is not aligned with love has to go. You may find that the wounds and the pain of the past get stirred up and your ego rises up to defend the ground it has held for years.

The transformation typically doesn’t come over night. Thankfully, the emotions we have held in our limbic system and cells of the body are not flushed out in one fell swoop. That would be overwhelming to say the least! When these emotions are flushed out and the mental chatter is activated it feels like you are going crazy. Part of the process seems like we are stepping on land mines or trip wires in our path. It’s the new triggers along the way that flush these emotional “pigeons” from their hiding places so we can let go of old energy that is not serving our highest and best.

These birds make messes because they are part of a mal-programed ego, which reminds me of a DJ spinning tunes. The DJ can only playback the records of what is in his repertoire. Mal-programed egos replay every painful situation and activate every open wound. The reprogramming process can feel like salt being poured into wounds: it hurts, yet it’s healing.

It is helpful to step outside your situation and view things from the perspective of your higher self. Then, you observe what you feel as you watch yourself from a non-biased perspective. We can become the observer of these thoughts and not re-experience them at an emotional level that reinforces them or causes them to be re-processed through the cells of our bodies. Those cells are already hurting and wounded; they need to be healed. If you feel angry, then you’re angry. Accept that. Tell yourself it is okay to feel angry about the hurt that you encountered regardless of whether the incident occurred years ago or last week. Then, remind the ego that the incident is not real and it does not have power over you. Affirm that you are a divine being who perceives and receives only love. Letting go of the past means staying present in the current moment. Stop replaying the tapes of the past.

Once you have flushed out whatever is hiding in our cells, you can allow divine love to come in. This love is accompanied by new truth about who you are, what you want in life, and what you expect in your relationships. It may mean you need to set boundaries to keep other people with wounded and defensive egos from walking all over you! The temptation to close your heart is always there, but the ability to open it is also there. It’s a matter of choice and we make that choice daily, hourly, minute by minute, thought by thought, emotion by emotion.

Seek others who can help you in this. Don’t hide or isolate; that just allows the pigeons to settle comfortably back in the hole, but you still have to deal with them later if you are to make progress on your spiritual journey. Talk to a coach, counselor, or spiritual friend about what’s going on.
Do you think there’s a possibility that you can open to divine love? Be with that thought and experience it fully. It’s like a balm, an ointment, a salve, to these wounded cells. Allow it to be, to grow, expand, and increase. Soon you will find that moments of bliss will come more and more often and stay longer. The bliss will become more intense over time. Live in this now moment where there are no problems—there’s no past, there’s no future, there’s just the now. There are no wounds in the now moment. There’s nothing that needs to be healed in the now moment. This moment is perfection now. And that is divine love.

Because we can easily lose perspective and think that these pigeons are our real identity, we need help and support from others who are able to understand what is happening and provide calm insight into the situation. As a spiritual coach, I can help by sharing what I have learned about managing emotional energy and clearing it from the cells of your body. Opening Your Heart to Safe Love

At the deepest level of our soul and spirit we know that we are love. We all crave to experience this love in a tangible way. We know it’s within us and that we have the capability of flowing this love through our hearts. And, we want and need to express it with other people. But we’ve all experienced hurt, loss, and woundedness in our past that has caused us to close our hearts to the experience of love with ourselves and with others.

Those wounds create detrimental patterns that get locked in the cells of our bodies. Whenever there is a new trigger similar the original hurt, the ego mind and our emotions come to the defense to protect those damaged (mal-programmed) cells. Those memories serve as reminders to protect us from future hurt. Our heart wants to open and be loved by another and yet the feelings of loss, pain, betrayal, deception of our past won’t let us. We put up a garrison, a fortress around our heart, so that even when we want to open and know we need to and could, we don’t.

So how do we move this fortress out of the way? How do we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and feel safe enough to take down the guards? It has to be done at a cellular level. We have to reprogram the cells in our bodies with new information, with positive messages, and then step out in faith when the opportunity comes to be loved by another. The experience of loving and being loved by another person is worth the risk. The problem with trying to love another is that the other is probably just as wounded as you are and you trigger one another even with this fresh opportunity to be loved. As we heal our own hearts, we learn who can provide a safe experience and we only open to those who can nurture and receive our love.

The opportunity to love another, to blossom and grow, to step outside of our past experience, and live truly in the now moment requires us to take action in the physical realm. We can repeat affirmations, get into a support group, or spend time with non-judgmental people who can help us walk through this situation. But the change also has to come on a spiritual level. A transmission of grace and transmuting energy can lift all the impairment from the cells and allow Spirit’s healing love to rewrite the programs that we’ve been carrying in our emotions and in our mental field.

It’s not the soul that needs to be healed. The soul is pure conscious love. The soul knows how to love. It’s the brain, the body, emotions, cells, and the mind that must be healed if we are to ever experience love in an open-hearted manner. Old emotionally charged wounds are triggered and the defense mechanism is set off when we encounter a current situation that is like the original hurt. When this happens, we need to push through the pain and allow healing to come in so we can allow ourselves be loved again—not ignorantly, but with eyes wide open and fully understanding the risks. We learn to guard our hearts in a new way. Not with walls that close us off, but by filling our heart with love from the divine source our higher self. The beings of light who are part of our monadic group of spirit helpers are always sending love to us. It’s a matter of opening to receive that love.

Sometimes love is facilitated through another person who has opened their own heart so that they can help you open yours. That doesn’t mean this person doesn’t still have issues—they’re learning and growing too. It means they have taken the first step and are allowing healing love and light to come in and to begin its work of transformation. Because this work is transmuting and re-writing the old programming in the cells with new truth and new messages of oneness, this person can share from a higher perspective and help others begin to live in the truth of who they are as individuations of Source. As a spiritual coach, I can help by sharing what I have learned about managing emotional energy and clearing it from the cells of your body.
