Coffee as an Antidepressant: Its Pros and Cons

Adapted from Dr. Judith Orloff’s new book “Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life” (Three Rivers Press, 2011)

In America, we consume over 400 million cups of coffee every day. Ever wonder why so many of us make such a lustful beeline for our caffeine?  Could it be the oodles of antioxidants it contains? Or that science has revealed its health benefits, including lowered risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, gallstones, and colon cancer? I don’t think that even these unquestionable virtues are what make coffee the highlight of your day. Then what does? The mood and energy-enhancing effects of caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and acts as an antidepressant by elevating serotonin and dopamine--it’s even been shown in the Archives of Internal Medicine to lower suicide rates. Some experience the mood boost more than others. Unknowingly, many people self-medicate depression with caffeine. How to know if you’re doing this versus just getting a beneficial pick-me-up? Some tip-offs: You consume more than four caffeinated beverages daily, including teas and diet sodas. Or you keep increasing your caffeine intake to feel less depressed, but it’s losing its effectiveness. I’m all for making the most of coffee’s therapeutic perks to allay low-level depression, but sometimes you may need other approaches when this emotion still persists. To find out if you’re self-medicating depression, you can stop your caffeine intake. After a month (most withdrawal symptoms, which include headache and fatigue, will be over by then) notice if you’re notably more depressed without caffeine, not always an easy experiment. Should you discover that you are self-medicating, also consider the numerous therapies discussed in this chapter to augment coffee, or to replace it. However, mild depressions can respond well to simply drinking up to three cups daily. (Try spacing them out; caffeine remains in the system four to six hours). More than this increases side effects and raises the chances of tolerance and addiction: You consume greater quantities but don’t get the lift. Always consider caffeine’s pluses and minuses. Reduce your intake if you have insomnia, heartburn, palpitations, headaches, or nervousness. Moreover, if you’re being treated for heart disease, hypertension, gastrointestinal problems, or other chronic illnesses, consult your physician before you ingest caffeine in any form.

Judith Orloff MD, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and intuition expert, is author of the New York Times Bestseller Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life (Three Rivers Press, 2011) Her other bestsellers are Positive Energy, Intuitive Healing, and Second Sight. Dr. Orloff synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition and energy medicine. She passionately believes that the future of medicine involves integrating all this wisdom to achieve emotional freedom and total wellness. www.drjudithorloff.com

Setting Boundaries Using Physical Stance

If you feel that someone or something is trying to drain your energy, you might try taking a physical position to block out external influences. This might include crossing your arms in front of your chest or crossing your legs. Make all your fingers on your left hand touch the fingers on your right hand (think praying hands without the palms touching). Close your eyes, clear your mind, and take long, slow, even breaths until you begin to feel comfortable. It's a way to take a break to refresh and strengthen your body, mind, and aura. Closing off your energy in this way will protect you from negative influences, and keep your energy from reaching other people.

Empaths Knowing What Someone is Thinking or Feeling

Webster defines empathy as “the capacity for participation in another person's feelings.” Everyone has some empathic ability. We were all born with the ability to feel other people's emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations. Highly sensitive people may get intuitive clues about a person and feel that we cannot trust him or feel that he is hiding something or lying.
We can listen to our intuition about a situation and ascertain whether or not it is safe or wise for us to proceed. Being able to know what others are thinking, feeling, or experiencing is a way of protecting ourselves. It also has its drawbacks when unchecked as you will see in my story below.
While shopping at Wal-Mart one day I suddenly had a panic attack. Fear overtook my body and the “fight or flight” adrenaline rush nearly crippled me as I clung to the shopping cart. I felt as though I was going to pass out before I could get to a place where I could sit down. I was shaking so hard, I could hardly breathe. My heart was pounding fiercely and at first I thought I was having a heart attack!

Within one minute a “Code Adam” announcement came over the store’s intercom system and the store was locked down. I knew then that I had taken into my body and emotions the panic and fear of the parent who had lost their child in the store. Fortunately, I was still able to sense my own personal energy separate from this chaos. Part of me was calm and level-headed as I witnessed this bizarre emotional reaction. I was sane enough to call upon angels to help locate the boy and reunite him safely with his parent—I intuitively knew the child was male and that his mother was in the store. I placed myself inside a bubble of protection—a visual exercise I use for protection—and the symptoms began subsiding.

When I heard the child had been found, I cried for joy. I knew I was still picking up on the mother’s energy of relief, but that was the best I could do at the time. I immediately left my cart in the aisle and walked out of the store. I was wiped out for the rest of the day.

There are ways to avoid this kind of “hit” and I give some of these exercises in my book, Whose Stuff Is This? ~ Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You. PURCHASE the paperback book at http://tinyurl.com/EmpathAmazon.

I went through layer after layer until I finally broke through and found that what was missing from my life was ME! I WAS MISSING! My REAL self was missing and I did not even know it. Is Being a Highly-Sensitive Person a Blessing or a Curse?

The gift of empathy is a blessing that can seem like a curse when we don't understand how to use it. This intuitive ability to feel energy is actually a divine gift that allows us to use our body as a guidance tool and to know what is energetically going on around us.

The problem is, the body is not designed to run emotional energy--only true feelings (learn the difference between emotions and feelings)--but our world has taught us to meddle in everyone's business but our own and this is how we get into trouble. Other people need to have their own experience in order to learn and take responsibility for what they are creating. You don't need to fix anything for them--only fix what is yours!

I know this is going to sound really strange, but you are the creator of your own reality and life experiences. We've been taught that God imposes his will upon us, but the truth is the Universe/God is going to support you in whatever decisions you make. We are working with energy--everything is energy. If you don't like what you've created, you can create something new starting this very moment.

It's a matter of setting clear boundaries to not allow your energy to roam into the field of another person. Every thought and emotion you send out to another person has the ability to transfer energy to/from them. If you are not putting your own needs first and filling yourself up with God Source energy, then this exchange can make you feel drained by others. Therefore, self-love must be your primary goal. This is what puts you in touch with God and your body, which is the temple or vehicle for Spirit to work through.

If you are having problems managing emotional energy, I would be happy to do some coaching with you. See http://weare1inspirit.com/services/coaching for details.

Empaths and Highly Sensitive People May Feel Drained

Samantha says being an empath is generally draining. “You may feel dread or have to prepare yourself to be around people. It makes it impossible to get down to what you truly feel instead of what others are projecting to you,” says Samantha. “There are a few people who are very good at disguise. Their energy may feel positive at first, but they can’t keep up the wall very long.”
Empaths need a place where they can be alone each day to replenish their positive energy. For that reason, living alone is essential for some like Samantha. She says this is the only way she can begin her day without feeling anxious or sometimes deeply depressed. On the contrary, animals calm her because they present themselves honestly and are pure beings at all times. “I don't usually feel much from them unless they have been abused or are hurt,” she says. “Sometimes I feel the same around very young children.”

Private space is very important to energy-sensitive people, so plan to find a place to practice these techniques. Your space should be free of clutter and arranged so it allows energy to flow and not get stuck. For some really easy tips on how to create a beneficial space using the principles of feng shui, I suggest Tisha Morris’ book, 27 Things to Feng Shui Your Home.

If your space is used by other family members, you may need to cleanse your sacred space before you begin each session. I suggest smudging with sage, lighting incense or a candle, drumming, shaking a percussion rattle, or ringing a bell. Your sacred space will become your personal haven, so make it special. After several sessions, you may notice how positive energy has accumulated in your sacred space and welcomes you each time you enter.

Do you have a quiet place in your home where you can revive yourself spiritually? This is one of the most important things an empath can do to keep from being bombarded by detrimental energy in their environment.

Energetic Clearing Technique

by Claudia McNeely

Take a deep breath and relax. Decide what issue you want to work on, then repeat the following:
I ask my Spirit, to go throughout time, through my ancestry, through my soul's lineage, through my soul contracts, through all of my aspects and locate all causes, signs, side effects, predispositions to and damage from all the ways and all the reasons me or any of my aspects feel or have ever felt issue or negative emotion .  Take my Higher Self and every aspect of my being to the very first incident that caused this issue to start. Analyze every aspect of it and heal it perfectly, permanently and completely.  Come throughout time, through my ancestry, through my soul's lineage, through my soul contracts, through all of my aspects, healing each incident based upon the foundation of the first, until I am at the present filled with light, love, peace and truth. I am/feel positive thought or emotion. Know that every negative thought or inappropriate behavior based on this issue quickly disappears. Take all the time you need Spirit, but quicken time and do the job NOW. Thank you, Spirit.

Claudia McNeely - http://www.askclaudia.com - is a gifted and caring Psychic and Master Energy Healer. With the assistance of Angels, Guides and Master Healers, she will tell you exactly what she sees and feels instead of what you want to hear. She can help you to understand where you are, where you want to be and how to get there. She can help you to heal on very deep levels quickly and easily.

Divine White Light to Protect Empaths in Public Settings

Whenever I feel uneasy or am about to go into a public setting where I may encounter a high influx of energy from others, I visualize Divine white light extending from the highest realms of the universe to the center of Gaia—Mother Earth. This light surrounds my body and aura, as it clears and balances all aspects of my being. I establish a grounding cord of the color I feel impressed is right for the situation. I draw in my aura size to about two feet from my body.

I ask for a shower of golden sunlight to flow through my aura for about two minutes while I visualize the Christ-gold light and Archangel Michael’s blue light surrounding me. I ask Archangel Chamuel to help lost souls find their way to the light without my having to be consciously involved in the process.

Finally, before leaving home, I ask for the violet flame of St. Germaine to surround the outer boundary of my aura to transmute any negative energy into an energy form that is beneficial for me, my body, my life, and others. Using the decree below, spend a few moments (three times a day is recommended), visualizing yourself standing within a pillar of Violet Flame rushing from your feet to some distance above your head and extending for at least three feet on each side around your body.

Here is an exercise found in The Saint Germain Series by Godfré Ray King:

Mighty I AM Presence! blaze through me Thy Conforming Flame of Divine Love. Take this desire out of me, annihilate its cause and effect, past, present and future, and replace it by the Fullness of Yourself, your Perfect satisfaction, and hold your Full Dominion here forever.

Hold this picture as long as you can and feel the Flame, which is the purifying power of Divine Love, penetrating every cell of your body. This dissolves all impure and unnecessary substances in the cells of the body, thus clearing and illumining the consciousness.

Emotionally and Physically Detaching: A Tool for Empaths

An empath's best coping method is the ability to emotionally and physically detach from others or a situation. An empath is a feeler, but we know when we’ve reached our limit. If the emotional burden of another becomes too great, we can pull away without being hateful, angry, or upset with that person. It is an essential act of self-preservation that must be utilized.

I find that being in a crowd for a long period of time is still overwhelming for me sometimes. So, for social gatherings where there will be a lot of unfamiliar energy, I either stay near someone I know or engage in conversation with someone whose energy feels good—I generally gravitate toward children! If I start to feel overwhelmed, I’ll find a corner where I can observe the action without being antisocial or placing myself right in the middle of things. That allows me to take breaks without being missed while I go outside or to a quiet room to get away from the cacophony of energy. If my husband goes with me to a social event and I start feeling over stimulated, I can stand near him or hold his hand for a moment to help ground myself with his energy. If I do this several times, he knows I am ready to leave and will look for a way to politely say our goodbyes. If I am going to a function without my husband, I may drive my own car so I’m not stranded if I need to leave.

Daily Empath Prayer Before Leaving Home

Prayer is an important part of any spiritual practice because it offers the opportunity to petition the divine source, which is always positive, uplifting, and beneficent. Though it is hard to believe sometimes, earthbound entities do respect free will and respond to prayers that gently ask them to leave. Regardless of whether you believe in entities or not, these methods work to remove detrimental influences of all kinds. These practices cannot do you any harm or cause retaliation. If you sense you are being affected by an entity or dark energy—recite a prayer as often as necessary. Here are a few examples:

As I leave home today, I will not sense other people’s feelings or pain. I ask my angels or spirit guides to put white light around me to prevent me from picking up energy that is not beneficial to me. The Light will heal and bless others as it protects me.

Father/Mother/God/Spirit/Source, I ask that all souls, energy patterns, and entities be sent on their spiritual evolution for the highest good and mutual benefit of everyone concerned.

Crystals and Gemstones

I have a bowl of gemstones that I love toying with. I lay them out in a circle or row and intuitively decide which one has the energy I need to clear or protect myself at that time. My daughter-in-law, Amanda, is a jewelry artisan with a shop on Etsy.com (http://www.etsy.com/shop/eidolajewelry). I’ve had her custom-design several of my favorite crystals into pendants that I can interchange on a silver neck chain. I almost always wear a necklace or carry a gemstone in my pocket when I go out into public. I even wear them at home because I love the positive energy they emit.

Harriette Knight’s book, Gemstone Power 52 Meanings and Meditations from Abalone to Zircon, is a great resource for learning more about working with stones. With 52 gemstones listed in the book, you may enjoy contemplating on a particular stone each week for a year. And it’s an educational book as well as one that inspires. For example: did you know that the amethyst is the state gemstone for South Carolina? And that citrine is good for relieving depression? Did you realize that peridot is the birthstone for August? It’s great to know what stones to use for what condition.

After discovering the information and application for each stone, you may soak up your own intuitive message as you follow the guided meditation given on the corresponding page. Overall, the book is par excellence!
