Highly Sensitive Indigo Children and Crystal Kids

You may have heard of Indigo Children or Crystal Kids, who have intuitive gifts that surprise or even astound adults. These empathic children easily pick up on the feelings and thoughts of adults and others as they unconsciously reach into human and spirit energy fields to gather information and understand things around them. Seeing with their spiritual eyes, feeling with their spiritual senses, hearing with their spiritual ears, they may give information about a past life, tell of events before they happen, see ghosts, or know something about another person or situation that no one else does. Today, as many as one in four children have this ability and are tuned into the higher frequency all the time.

Because these children do not know how to set personal boundaries (or that they need to), they do not realize when they are in another person’s mental or emotional space, much less how invasive this can be to that person. It can also affect the child’s own vibrational level. As parents we need to teach our children how to properly use this empathic gift, but many adults do not trust their own intuition, much less recognize their children’s spiritual abilities. Empathic kids and teens need someone they can talk to, and they need information on how to keep their auras clear and to open and shut their intuitive abilities at will. It is important for adults to help them learn how to do this and set energetic boundaries. The more you read and study this topic, the better you will be able to answer your children’s questions. I hope you will relate to what you are learning here and help the children in your life develop their intuition.

In my book, Whose Stuff Is This? ~ Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You, Dr. Caron Goode shares the four core temperaments as they relate to the psychological aspect of empathy. I invite you to read this book!

How Babies Demonstrate Empathy

Empathy is what makes other people matter to us and reminds us to acknowledge the people around us as we understand and share their feelings. At what stage in our social development does empathy begin?
As an intuitive counselor, Dr. Caron Goode is an expert on the early development of empathy and a child’s sensitivity to others. She notes that empathy exists in early mother-infant bonding. Even before birth, a baby in the womb is sensitive to the mother’s feelings, whether positive, neutral, or negative. Once born, a baby shows receptivity to both parents’ anger, tension, and depression, as well as their caring, responsiveness, and love.

In an article titled “Empathy: Big Feelings from Little Ones,” the Talaris Research Institute concludes that life starts with a biological bent toward empathy. From birth, babies have the ability to respond to the emotions of others. You’ve probably noticed how they imitate your facial expressions, smiling in response to your smile. They also may cry if they hear another baby cry. This type of response is a step in the development of empathy and the ability to share the feelings of another person.

Martin Hoffman, a psychology professor at New York University who did the first studies on infant empathy in the 1970s, questioned why babies cry when they hear another baby crying. Does this mean that the baby is truly concerned for his fellow human, or just annoyed by the noise? A study built on Hoffman's work was conducted in Italy in which researchers played for infants a recording of other babies crying. As predicted, the tears started flowing. But the odd thing is that when researchers played babies a recording of their own cries, they rarely cried. This shows that there is some rudimentary form of empathy in place, right from birth, but Hoffman also noted that the emotion tends to fade over time. Babies older than six months no longer cry when they hear another baby crying, but they may grimace when they notice the discomfort of others.

Have you noticed your baby showing signs of being empathic?

Educate Caregivers Regarding Your Empathic Child

Dr. Caron Goode talks about how to support empathic children. She suggests that parents be proactive and not wait for a situation to arise. Explain to teachers, babysitters, grandparents, and caregivers up front that your child has some unique qualities or energetic sensitivity that may be displayed while under their care. Depending upon the age of the child, I can be helpful to either 1.) Empower the child to take responsibility for some situations, or 2.) Educate the caregivers about what is going on with the child spiritually and energetically.
With a younger the child, the caregiver or babysitter has to be told what to expect. Such as in the case with kids who see ghosts.  There was a young native American child raised by his father and his grandmothers. When the child went to school, the father went to school to let the teacher know that if she had any questions about his behavior she should call the father directly.  You see, the boy has been raised by his grandmothers, but oh by the way his grandmothers have passed over. From an early age the boy was trained to speak to his spirit walker grandmothers.  They were with him; they raised him; they taught him how to do spiritual healing because he’s very much a young shaman in training.  The father went to the school and explained specifically that the boy will go up and put his hand on other children’s hearts to soothe them when they are hurt or cry.  One day the teacher came in after a car accident and the boy went up to her and touched her heart.  Because she had been told in advance, she knew what he was doing and she was very accepting of it.
It takes pro-action. We’ve got to help these kids get through. We’ve got to educate so other people can understand and accept them.  Be a champion communicator, get out there and help!

Divorced Parenting of Empathic Children

Due to divorce and joint custody arrangements, many children live in two environments. One may be orderly and calm. The other may be haphazard and chaotic. What is done with children in one home can carry over to the other. If one parent understands the empathic child’s sensitivity and the other doesn’t, it can create a huge discordant problem for the empathic child.
In working with parents who are separated or working out a divorce plan for their families, one parent might feed the child sugar and junk food and then send them to the other parent where it takes quite literally a week to help the child change their behavior and get back on course again.  It is imperative that parents teach their children how to take care of their own energy.  For example, there was one child high on the autism spectrum, who went to his father’s where he was teased for his sensitivity. He would go to bed in tears.  He wet the bed and the problem continued to escalate. The mom was a very savvy and smart woman, so rather than keeping him in the victim mode she quickly taught him resilience.  She taught him how to strip the bed before he could be teased.  She taught him how to wash his own sheets and make his bed again before they would jump on him for doing something wrong.  She basically taught him how to take care of himself and he did a very good job.  Definitely being in a home environment where there are emotional connections requires some very specific management.
Join us tomorrow on this blog for another segment of Dr. Caron Goode’s discussion on how to support empathic children. To get the full transcript and listen to Caron’s entire presentation as well as the teaching of Suzy Miller, you may purchase the mp3s here:

The Heart – Stabilizing Solution for Empathic Children

by Dr. Caron Goode

“Heart Math’s findings point to the human heart as playing a key role in the intuitive process, and a recent study concludes the heart actually receives intuitive information faster than the brain— by a second or slightly more.”

Meantime, the empathic intuitive reads people’s emotions clearly, senses the underlying feelings and scans body language and facial features for congruence. What the empath tunes into may be comfortable or not, which underlies the need for emotional management skills for intuitive, empathic children.

Neuroscience has mapped how the whole brain processes information in four ways: feeling, sensing, intuition and thinking. New research from the psychology of heart transplants has shown us how intelligent hearts are emotional centers and make intelligent decisions for our comfort.

Empathic children can use this understanding to their benefit.

The heart and brain connection starts in-utero. From fetal heart cells grows a neural tube. The brain develops on the other end. Our heart grows connections with the brain and central nervous system and they communicate with each other constantly.

An intuitive child or parent can use the heart energy to gauge clarity of their feelings and how to interpret them.

 A calming exercise is a physical activity like breathing or a mental exercise like visualization that helps one relax.

 Calming is a basic survival skill, an absolute must-have tool, for an intuitive child, especially the empath. An intuitive listens to intuition best when calm, not rushed. A creative child learns best when he can focus calmly.

 A calm heart has a soothing influence on the brain and the whole central nervous system. Intuitive children can calm anxiety, excitation, or distraction easily. The following three strategies provide a calming influence and help an intuitive parent or child to focus better.

 Place their right palms on their chests and breathe slowly for several minutes. When they feel the neck and shoulders relax, they’ve arrived!

 Touching the heart, imagine an elevator in their heads. They enter the elevator when the doors open, push the heart-shaped button, and feel the movement down through the throat into the chest. The doors open, they step out into their heart and remain there in silence for a while.

 As a parent, teach your child to find answers in his heart and his head. Show him that logic and intuition are not opposites. As a teacher, Caron gathered large, flat river stones, and the students in her class either wrote or drew a head on one side and heart on the other. When they had to make a personal choice about studies or peer or family matters, they turned the stone face up on either side, and asked their head or heart as designated. They got to explore two answers: the logical and the intuitive, and then discussed options. This proactive way to help solve a problem is easily used by teachers or parents.

Helping An Empathic Child Restore Strength

by Caron Goode

“A resilient child does not need all these features to be resilient, but one (set of skills) is not enough. Resilience results from a combination of these features.”

The International Resilience Project put forth A Guide to Promoting Resilience in Children: Strengthening the Human Spirit. In this book, the author, Goldberg, suggests that children can draw from three sources of resilience. The first is to know what is available to them. The second resource is their inner personal skills, and the third resource is the action they can take. The three resources are reflected in statements for each category:

I HAVE represents what is available in their environment.
I AM statements reflect the child’s resources.
I CAN statements represent what the child could do, what action feels right.

I HAVE
 A big brother who supports me and loves me.
 My dog, Max, who sleeps on my bed when I feel upset.
 My family who love me.

I AM
 A sensitive person who likes to help others.
 Happy most of the time
 Willing to be responsible for what I do

I CAN
 Share my feeling with my parents when I am overwhelmed.
 Shift my moods from sad to happy
 Take ten deep breaths to calm down and focus.

How An Empathic Child Can Self-Soothe

by Dr. Caron Goode

Through empathic touch, you teach an intuitive child to trust his sense of feeling and his body’s messages. By pairing touch with empathy you teach the child to calm himself, a trait that every teacher who labels a child hyperactive is seeking. When a child touches his own heart, laying the palm to rest on the chest, he harmonizes his energy and synchronizes the body’s rhythm. He brings chaos to comfort and distractions to center.

Holding your child next to your heart is the most effective way to feel strength. Heart to heart hugs look like cradling the child in your lap, his back to your chest or kneeling down to your child’s level and embracing her heart to yours. Rocking also creates a calm state for younger children. A child can also place his hand on his heart and settle into the feeling of it for several seconds to produce calm.

Tender loving touch is important throughout one’s entire life, especially for the empath. In the developing embryo, a layer of cells called the ectoderm produces the skin and the nervous system. In this concrete physiological connection, touch provides “food” to the nervous system for the human to experience.

Purposeful, empathic touch to regulate and support an empathic child’s physiology tells the nervous system to be resilient and calm.

How Common is the Gift of Empathy?

We are seeing more and more people —especially children—awakening to this gift as the Earth is shifting into a higher realm of consciousness. Between fifteen and twenty percent of the population have an excess amount of sentient ability. They tend to become overloaded with the psychic energy of others to the point of compromising their own well-being. Yet, most of them do not know they are empaths, much less what to do about it. Currently, most medical doctors and counselors do not recognize empathy overload or know how to treat people who are suffering with this energy-related condition.
If an empath does not understand what is happening he may think he has some form of mental distress or disorder—especially if he hears, sees, and senses things that other people do not. Some empaths have been misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses.

Handle Empathic Children With Love in Emotionally Toxic Homes

By Caron Goode

Is your home emotionally toxic? That is…do you order your kids around, hit them, scream at them, forget to touch them with love, forget to be kind, ignore them when they cry or need you? Among the emotional factors that contribute to negative, even toxic, emotional atmospheres in homes are

 Surprise or intense outbursts from anger or control issues.
 Verbal putdowns or psychological bullying,
 Physical abuse, including spanking, inappropriate sexual touching, and harassment.
 Substance abuse and its vampire-like energy drain
 Resentment, lack of respect and inappropriate behavior derived from bullying tactics like pushing, hitting, punching and knuckling the head.

Any child will buckle under when subjected to such behaviors, and for empathic or emotional intuitives who feel more profoundly than the average child, such behaviors can cripple or devastate. The potential for emotional harm inflicted on sensitive children has far larger ramifications than for other temperament styles.

Take extra care with empathic children for health, immune system strength, and the ability to develop resilience. They must build to be able to stand up for themselves or know when to withdraw. All children need a champion, and empathic children need an especially caring one.

Kellie had two younger brothers, and all three children were close growing up in a single parent household. All three children remember a household of humor, movies and popcorn, long walks and stories at bedtime during their preschool years. Kellie’s mother, Leslie, remarried when Kellie was nine years old, and her brothers were eight and seven. The tenor of their household changed from happy to distressful. Their stepfather argued with Leslie, worked at night and slept during the days, and children felt like they walked on eggshells.

One morning before school, Kellie’s brothers wrestled and broke an item in their living room. No one confessed to the crime, so Leslie put all three children in the bathroom, closed the door, and told them if one of them didn’t confess, she would have their father spank all three of them.

Well, no one confessed, but empathic Kellie was a nervous wreck after waiting in the bathroom for two hours for her stepfather to come home. Her bladder was full, and when her stepfather walked through the bathroom door with a belt in his hand, she broke down and sobbed. He made each child pull down their pants, lean over his lap, and he spanked them with the belt. Kellie urinated all over him, sobbed, and was in shock.

She turned white and fell to the floor at being assaulted. When she curled into a fetal position, her brothers ran to Leslie to report that something was wrong. Kellie was put to bed where she ran a fever for three days and vomited as if she had the flu. As an adult, Kellie described her impression as seeing the evil in her stepfather and feeling vulnerable when spanked, “I felt like I swallowed his violence, absorbed it like a sponge, so intensely that I fell ill. I had to purge my body through vomiting.” I had nightmares well into my teen years of being assaulted again. From that day forward, I hated that man and my mother for the way she dealt with a child’s simple mistake.”

Please remember, handle empathic children with care, respect and kindness.

Helping Empathic Children Adjust in Families

by Caron Goode

Experts agree that happy children share characteristics like optimism and a sense of control. How can parents create a supportive family atmosphere to create successful intuitive children? This chapter starts with how to provide support for the emotional empath and help them develop calm and resilience.

 Our support goal for an emotional empath is to strengthen emotional energy, especially of the heart.
 Our second support goal is to empower resilience so they can interact with the environment, not withdraw from it.
 A third support goal is to monitor and maintain an emotionally healthy atmosphere in your home.

An empath’s vulnerability can also be their challenge in an emotionally toxic home where they have to learn to cut off their feelings so they can survive.

The primary home environment provides the first stable space in which an empathic child learns to value personal feelings and how to interpret the emotional atmosphere of the home. Margaret’ story shows how a psychic, sensitive, or empathic child can interpret a parent’s emotions, and her decision as a child affected her relationship with her father significantly.

Margaret’s was empathic, and she came from a large Italian family of seven children. All were talkative and emotionally expressive. Her family had a celebration for Margaret’s First Communion day and invited relatives and members of the church community. It was normal to see the men in her family drinking beer and sometimes wine at these family celebrations.

In the late afternoon, Margaret’s observed her father’s emotional energy for the first time: “I kept staring at Dad because I had never seen like storm clouds around him before. Usually Dad was all sunshine and smiles. I was seeing my father’s aura. His alcoholic haze looked like dark clouds, and his mood was angry. Even though I was used to his booming Italian voice, when his emotional tone changed to anger, his voice matched the dark clouds seen by my young eyes. I was confused and that day was the start of my withdrawal from his energy. Being in touch with his dark stormy emotions made me feel sick to my stomach. My father’s alcoholism grew through the years, and our relationship withered.”

Rather than Margaret withdrawing from her father to feel safe, another option would be to create communication and understanding between them—a path of resilience for Margaret. Research from The International Resilience Project reviewed what we mentioned in chapter one: “A child's own genetic make-up and temperament are fundamental to whether he or she will be resilient. That is, a child's vulnerability to anxiety, challenges, stress or unfamiliarity determines his or her self-perception, how he or she interacts with others, and how he or she addresses adversities.”

An emotional empath like Margaret needs an adult in the family to model acceptance of other’s differences. A mentor, whether a parent, sibling, neighbor or schoolteacher can help sensitive children negotiate adversity by talking about it. For example an adult could help Margaret clarify that her dad only looked foggy when drinking alcohol. How did his energy appear at other times? Perhaps Margaret could have brought to his attention the fact that his children did not respond well to the anger and alcohol mix. Conversations have to happen!!

Support for Empathic Children

By Caron Goode

Empathic children feel their way through the world, and they have acute mental or emotional sensibilities, and they want to be responsive to other people’s feelings. Yet, at times, their sensitivity threshold is low. They are often told, “You are too sensitive,” rather than being recognized for their gifts of emotional intelligence.

What a delight when a child is recognized for his gift of empathy! Our friend, Dr. Minette Riordan, shared that when her sensitive son Conner was five years old and entered kindergarten, she went to work in launching a local parenting newspaper, North Texas Kids. One week of every month was pressure filled with newspaper deadlines, and Conner's response was to feel his mom’s stress and become distressed also.

Connor ended up getting into trouble at school for pushing another child into a locker. The teacher was clear that he was provoked but expressed concern that Conner, a normally happy, relaxed child, should react aggressively. After a lengthy discussion about what was going on at home, Minette realized that Conner would react to her stress at work by acting out at school.

Minette learned to help Conner through these stressful times by giving him plenty of advance notice about the timing of her busy, upcoming week. She would tell Conner, "I won't be home much this week" or "You won't see me as often this week, but once we get to Saturday, I will have the whole weekend to spend with you." Moreover, Minette made herself smile, hugged her son more, and talked to him in calming tones rather than strident tones. By managing her own stress and preparing Conner, she gave him language and a way to healthfully express his distress at not seeing her enough during that week of the month.

Minette’s story demonstrates what goes on in every household with parents and children. Children feel the parents’ pain, tension stress or discord—basically the emotional energy of the home that makes everyone uptight and upset. Yes, kids are adaptable, and part of parenting is to soothe and help children learn to soothe themselves. Such interactions are even more necessary for the “sensitive kids.”

Human and Animal Empath

Today we have another interview on Conduit of Joy in the Empaths R Us series. Nicole Chayka shares her experience as an empath who has been able to connect with what other people feel since childhood. Animals also respond to her energy. This was so natural to her that she didn't recognize herself as having abilities that others didn't have.

Empathic Babies, Children, and Teens

Empathy is what makes other people matter to us and reminds us to acknowledge the people around us as we understand and share their feelings. Empathy exists in early mother-infant bonding. Even before birth, a baby in the womb is sensitive to the mother’s feelings, whether positive, neutral, or negative. Once born, a baby shows receptivity to both parents’ anger, tension, and depression, as well as their caring, responsiveness, and love. You’ve probably noticed how they imitate your facial expressions, smiling in response to your smile. They also may cry if they hear another baby cry. This type of response is a step in the development of empathy and the ability to share the feelings of another person.

Babies absorb the mental and emotional energy of the people around them. They don’t filter anything; they simply receive. As a child ages, this empathic tendency may increase and get out of control. Some children pick up the emotions, energy, or thoughts of others to the degree that it becomes overwhelming and interrupts the development of their social and emotional life. Because these children do not know how to set personal boundaries (or that they need to), they do not realize when they are in another person’s mental or emotional space, much less how invasive this can be to that person. It can also lower the child’s own vibrational level.

An empath is sensitive to what is obvious as well as unseen things such as ghosts and the thoughts, emotions, and illnesses they sense around them. Empaths may get hunches, see mental pictures, hear voices, or have a gut feeling that supplies hidden information about people and situations. They may also get a physical sensation in their body that lets them know where another person is afflicted or suffering.

You may have heard of Indigo Children or Crystal Kids who have intuitive gifts that surprise or even astound adults.

Being an empath is very draining for an adult. Just imagine what it feels like to be an intuitive or empathic child and not have the language to explain it to your parents or teachers. A child who is overloaded with the energy of others may have on-going illnesses, show depressive episodes, lash out in anger, cry without reason, or try to “fix” things between adults who argue or do not get along well. A child or teen who sees or hears in the spirit realm may act out because he or she feels overwhelmed and does not know how to express what he or she is experiencing. The problem is compounded when adults will not listen, try to hush the child, or refuse to believe the child’s report of psychic incidents.

We do our intuitive children a great injustice when we invalidate their experiences and intuitive abilities. But, many parents simply don't know what to do with kids who see or hear spirits, talk about a deceased relative they never met in body, give clues into past lives, predict future events, or know some family secret they haven’t been privy to. In some cases, the “hushing” parent also has some paranormal gifts in operation that he or she is not comfortable talking about—maybe they were shushed by their parents and are simply mimicking the parenting role model they were given. As parents, teachers, and counselors we need to teach children how to properly use this empathic gift, but many adults do not trust their own intuition much less recognize their children’s spiritual abilities. Empathic kids need someone they can talk to and they need information on how to keep their auras clear, to open and shut their intuitive abilities at will, and set energetic boundaries. But, where do adults go to learn how to help these empathic kids and teens?

The more you read and study this topic, the better you will be able to answer your children’s questions and help them manage their intuitive gifts. Dr. Caron Goode and I invite you to learn more about a book we have written. It is titled WHOSE STUFF IS THIS? Finding Freedom from the Detrimental Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You.You may purchase the paperback version at http://tinyurl.com/EmpathAmazon.
