Writing/Journaling to Help Empaths Get Clear Direction

Janet Conner’s book, Writing Down Your Soul: How to Activate and Listen to the Extraordinary Voice Within, has made an impact upon my journaling because it takes me beyond writing down my daily problems to really connecting with my soul and discovering what Spirit is saying to me on a soul level. I attended a lecture at First Church Unity in Nashville where Janet shared how to use the following seven steps to get into theta brain wave:

1. Set your intention to connect with the voice inside you.
2. Address the voice directly: Dear ______ (fill in the blank with whatever name you want).
3. Write by hand.
4. Activate all five senses. Vision, hearing, and touch are automatic in this process, but include a candle, incense, aroma oil, or flowers for smell and water for taste.
5. Ask open-ended questions as you write.
6. Write fast; don't stop to correct grammar, spelling, or punctuation (very hard for me as an editor). Just let the words flow from spirit to paper without the interference of logic or correctness.
7. Be grateful; say thank you.

By reading her book and applying the lessons in a practice of writing, I learned how to get out of my conscious, stress-filled mind, get in touch with my deep, authentic self, and activate a limitless supply of intelligence, wisdom, and creativity.

Turn a Negative Experience into a Positive Life Lesson

Our attitude and how we think about something determines our experience of it. One person can have an experience and be devastated by it. Another person can have a similar experience and choose to see it as an opportunity from which they can learn. Scientists and physicists are now proving that everything is energy and that energy reacts in relationship to human thought and expectation. Therefore, how we think about a situation determines our reality.

What does this mean in our daily lives? We choose how we want people to treat us by the behaviors we accept in others and by how we expect to be treated.

In our childhood, we set the stage and form our beliefs about how much abundance, intimacy, joy, and pleasure we can expect in our lives. I grew up believing that if people knew who I really was, I wouldn’t be accepted. As a result, I spent many years trying to please people by attempting to be what I thought they expected. I had no idea who I really was, but I felt miserable.

Let’s chat. Think of an experience that you have seen as negative. Perhaps you did (or did not do) something because you allowed someone to influence or limit you. How can you now see that situation in a positive light? What life lesson did you learn? What experience did you gain that helped you stand stronger in your own power? Feel free to share that here now.

Three Choices for Responding When You Are Upset

I realize what a challenge it can be to stay positive in the emotionally-charged world in which we live. It will help if you prepare in advance when you must go into public settings or social gatherings. Surround yourself with love and light, ground your energy, and center yourself before you leave home. When you find yourself in stressful situations, take a break and find a quiet place where you can close your eyes, breathe consciously, let go of the external world, and tap into your true essence. Ask your divine guidance to transmute any detrimental energy into beneficial energy that can bless and help everyone find peace and joy within.

Whenever you feel heavy emotions, take action quickly! Acknowledge and release them before they take over and drag you down. That way, you can be non-resistant and present in every moment as you bring your attention and awareness to each thought, feeling, and activity as it is occurring. When something upsetting is occurring for you, there are three choices you can make:

1) Resist, deny, avoid, or ignore it (not recommended!)
2) Communicate, ask for what you need, and be willing to alter what you can about the situation. If another person involved will not cooperate with your peace-making efforts, cut ties with the offender or remove yourself from the unhealthy environment. Change jobs, relocate, or do whatever you need to bring about a better living/working condition or peace of mind. You do not have to complain, suffer, or play the role of a victim.
3) Accept the situation once you have done all you can to remedy it. This does not mean you are giving up or surrendering to something you abhor. It means you have released all the negative charge surrounding the situation and come to a place of peace that will allow you to remain where you are without suffering, stuffing, or seething. This option is best employed when you are dealing with an uncontrollable situation such as the death of a loved one or the termination of any close relationship.

How to Tell if You Are Ascending

We have just passed 12-12-12, which was a numerically significant date. Anytime we see double or triple digits it can be a sign to us that something noteworthy is occurring. We have also heard some pretty scary things about Dec. 21, 2012. I have absolutely no concern that anything horrible is going to happen to our planet as a result of some galactic event—I believe we will wake up on Dec 22 and realize we have only two days left to finish our holiday shopping. As the eternal optimist, I hold the intention that if anything at all happens, it will be a perceivable and positive shift in how we love ourselves and treat others.

If you are fearful of what might happen on the 21st of December, you will find comfort in this no nonsense astronomical explanation as to why the Earth seems to be unstable and where we are heading as an evolving race of humans.  http://youtu.be/hlfYHAV1i8w

So, with a world in turmoil over all the fear-based energy that has been planted in the collective consciousness by the media and religion, how does anyone know if they are making spiritual progress?

"How do I know I'm ascending?'

I get that question a lot so I decided to answer it on a call with several empaths who had questions of their own. I hope you enjoy this replay and will join us on the next live call. To get information about our upcoming events, be sure you are on our mailing list http://eepurl.com/dkpII.

Phenomenal Resources and Explanations for Managing Spiritual Integration

Award-winning author Yvonne Perry provides a thorough, well-researched resource for those spiritually-awakening people who are also questioning or are confused about the events in their lives. Perry likens the spiritual awakening to an ascension through which people integrate refined or “purer” energies. Each person experiencing this process will find phenomenal resources and explanations for managing their spiritual integration in this book.

Do you need to refine your personal judgments? Are you experiencing the ups and downs of an emotional roller coaster? Do you need support for physical problems? Do you need to know why the events are happening right now? Perry explains with uncanny thoroughness the answers to why and how each one of us might experience our personal version of the planetary and cosmic shifts. I’ve always admired Perry’s ability to explain spiritual events on a personal level and bring it home for the reader. Shifting into Purer Consciousness is one of her best yet.

The Firefly and the Butterfly

I've spoken many times about empaths and relationships because it's our interaction with others that cause so many highly-sensitive people to pick up detrimental energy. So much of this comes from our attempt to control a situation, manipulate an outcome, or make someone a prisoner of our expectations. Whether the relationship is with a parent being fearful of losing a child, or a lover being unfaithful, or a boss being a micro-manger, no relationship flourishes under these conditions.

Below is a poem I have written to show a contrast between a relationship in a fear-based paradigm and a relationship in a love-based paradigm of balance. Which "fly" is you in a troubling relationship right now?

The Firefly and the Butterfly

A firefly swooped near me
I caught her in my hands
and cupped her tightly so she could not flee
I would peer in upon my captive
just to watch her light up
I clinched my hands tighter
Snuffing out the air she needed
And closing the space around her
so she could not see the beauty of others
Her wings could not unfurl
Her spirit could not soar
Bound by my possessive grip
She had no choice or liberty
Her light faded
She became silent and still

A butterfly landed upon my open palm
His wing was slightly torn
I admired his gentle grace and beauty
but I dared not close my hand
for fear that I would crush his tender heart
and harm him in some way
Intently, I cast my eyes and restoring love upon him
and watched breathlessly to see if he would respond
Sometimes I would close my eyes and feel
the tickle of his wings, the pulse of his heart
or the movement of his tiny feet upon my skin
Soaking in the intense color and vibration
of all the life, freedom, and vitality he offers
I cannot hold him prisoner
while he heals and basks in the warmth of my hand
I realize the choice is not mine
Will he stay or fly away?

Suicide: A Perspective Beyond Time and Space

Adapted from Dr. Judith Orloff’s new book “Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life” (Three Rivers Press, 2011)

The dark night of all dark nights is the hopelessness of wanting to die.

In this state, you can see no promised land beyond depression.

Over the years, several of my patients have attempted suicide. One did die: a heavy metal rocker with a sapphire-blue Mohawk and a sensitive soul. But super-stardom could never allay his depression or persistent back pain for which none of the many specialists he consulted could locate a medical cause. Legions of fans revered him, but he didn’t revere himself. He felt happy and pain-free only on stage, immersed in his music and adulation. When he killed himself, we hadn’t met for many months, but I was deeply saddened. I’d been his safe place for two years; we’d been very close. I did everything I could think of to help him, but he was on a runaway course. Plus, he was surrounded by shark-like managers who urged him to go on tour despite his precarious condition. Intellectually, I realized all this, but still I lamented my inability to save his life. I’ll always miss him. I’ll always recall those days I’d visited him after a previous suicide attempt. He was on a locked psychiatric ward along with others who were psychotic, suicidal, and homicidal. To me, it’s a crime to put someone who’s depressed in with that mix. I wish I could’ve sent him to a peaceful retreat with sunlit porches and hammocks to dream on. But our mental health system isn’t organized like that. All those needing intensive care go to the same hellish ward in traditional hospitals. So I saw him there until he was no longer suicidal. Against my advice he went back on the road too soon. I was greatly afraid for him. Then, four months later, I got the call: he was found dead in his London hotel room after slashing his wrists.

Most suicides are preventable with skilled interventions. I know people--including those on a spiritual path--who at dark times have considered taking their lives. (Suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death among Americans.) If you’ve had these thoughts, they’re nothing to be ashamed of. But I also know that suicide isn’t the answer. Freedom comes when you persist in searching for the light until it’s visible again.
In service to our growth, life asks an extraordinary amount of us. That used to anger me. Some situations seemed unendurable. Watching my ebullient, talented mother waste away from cancer, struggling to find strength to be there for her without disintegrating, I’d inwardly protest, “I can’t do it. I don’t have it in me.” But I did--and had to see that. So must you. Try to keep reaching beyond pain towards a greater power within. My spiritual teacher says, “Heaven is not a dead-end road.” With hope and the proper support, you will find it.

For years I believed suicide was an option we had the right to choose if things got rotten enough. I no longer feel this way except, possibly, with terminal patients in constant physical agony. From deepening my intuition, I came to realize that holding onto suicide as an out separated me from the essence of living. A commitment to staying in my body through it all was mandatory for being fully alive. Thus, to be more present, I’ve vowed to follow the wisdom of whatever life brings.

Weigh this critical point: Leaving your body doesn’t make emotional challenges disappear. The soul’s work continues. What I intuitively sense about its destinations is that who you are here is who you’ll be there too, albeit without the physical form you’re accustomed to identifying with. I don’t mean this punitively. I’m simply saying you’ll eventually have to face your demons. Personally, I’d rather do it now than drag out the ordeal. I prefer to go onto other things. For those who believe in past lives, facing the self is unavoidable. Whether now or in distant eons, you must do it. This is good. This is purifying.

I’ve had an ex-boyfriend and some acquaintances commit suicide when depression became unbearable. Two by overdosing, one with a gun. Though I wasn’t in regular contact with these people at the time they took their lives, I was notified by mutual friends the day each suicide happened. While I was shaken by both these losses and the terrible desperation that must have occasioned them, I was also curious about where these people went and their subsequent state of being. So I tuned in, simultaneously inquisitive and anticipatorily weary about the kinds of pain I’d encounter. What did I find? None of them were in places I’d ever want to be, and each felt utterly lost. Always there was severe confusion, a swirling-through-limbo vertigo that made me nauseous. Where they were at felt like the alarming, abrupt plummeting of an airplane during turbulence--but cube that by the speed of light and picture if it didn’t let up. Still, despite the dire straits they were all clearly in, I also intuited a beneficent force surrounding them, though it didn’t seem as if they recognized it. They felt totally alone. When tuning into the lawyer who’d shot herself in the head, I found her disorientation was so jolting I could barely stay with it. This panicked woman had no idea where she was. Dizzying, disjointed memories of her life were bombarding her at such speed, “overwhelmed” didn’t begin to describe her condition. I suspect it took a while to find her bearings and proceed to a calmer place. From what I could intuit, the violence of her suicide made the transition even more chaotic. Once I got the gist of her experience, I wanted out of that vision so I didn’t risk absorbing such angst.

I share my perceptions with you to offer what I sensed about suicide. As you can see, it may not be a way out of anything, as many depression sufferers envision. Though the pain in question may be temporarily put on the back burner, suicide seems to create another set of problems and a tumultuous journey. Even so, I’m certain that the soul eventually finds clarity and gets all the chances it needs to master emotional obstacles.

My duty as physician and healer is to talk people out of suicide. I can be effective  because I absolutely know there’s hope for everyone and that depression is a distortion. It swallows the light, making misery seem like the only truth. But it is not. You must remember that. If ever suicide starts looking good, stop, regroup, and fight to find hope. Reach out for help. Don’t be seduced by the voice of depression.

The Difference between Feelings and Emotions - Part 2

Hinging upon the article I posted yesterday, I want to add the following thoughts.

Experiencing fear when you are considering your options could mean that you are picking up on the energy of another person—perhaps someone is urging you to make a decision that you really don’t think is best, but you are afraid of the consequences of disappointing them. Being true to your feelings means making the decision that is best for you and your divine path. If someone is trying to persuade you to be disloyal or is trying to lead you astray by making false promises, the above exercise should help you clarify the intentions of another person. Being honest with yourself means feeling what you feel without judging it to be right or wrong. The more honest you are with yourself, the more you will be able to discern truth and lies in others.

Once you get in touch with a feeling, continue to hold that sensation and get used to how it feels in your body. This is your instructive instinct—spiritual guidance or intuition that you can learn to trust and follow. Intuition and feelings do not come from the rational side of your brain; they come from a place of higher knowing that is meant to guide you even if it means taking risks.

I encourage you to do this exercise often because it will put you more in touch with your body, your feelings, and your internal guidance to help you make decisions from a place of higher understanding without emotional baggage. It will give you courage to go for what you really want in life and trust that everything will work out in perfect and divine timing and order.

The Difference between Feelings and Emotions

It is very important for empaths (anyone, really) to be able to distinguish the difference between emotions and feelings. Very simply put, emotions carry energetic signatures of the past and are based in thoughts. Feelings are recognized through the physical body and tell you what is going on for you in the present moment.

Both feelings and emotions can have an effect upon your body and mind. Because they are rooted in some past experience, emotions try to rule your choices by reminding you of consequences and keeping you stuck in your past. Generated by the small self, they are usually triggered by a current dilemma that reminds you of what happened in a similar previous experience. Because they tend to be fear based and can contain other people’s energy, emotions are very unreliable and self-limiting.

Feelings are life force energy flowing through you as they register a response within your physical body. Unlike emotions, feelings are yours and yours alone. They are painstakingly honest as they urge you to take a look at what is transpiring for you in the here and now. They are not based on past regrets/experiences nor are they concerned about the future. Therefore, they may encourage you to give up an old belief pattern or shift into a new way of living or viewing life. Feelings give you options and allow you to be in control of what action to take based upon this energetic information they provide.

Emotions are not real—they can and will lie to you. Feelings are real and always tell you the truth, even though you may not like their message or wish it were different.

Chapter 8 of Whose Stuff is This? gives the following exercise that I believe will help you determine whether you are experiencing an emotion or a feeling. Think about a situation you are currently in. Perhaps you are about to launch into a new business venture, or make a change in residence, or leave/begin a relationship. You probably have at least two choices to make: either go for it or turn away the opportunity—at least for the time being.

Take a deep breath to center your thoughts and become aware of your feelings. Put aside any worry about what will happen in the future, and honestly acknowledge whatever you feel right now. This doesn’t mean you will act upon it—just feel it. As you release the breath, hold the thought that you will accept the opportunity being presented to you.

Now think of the situation again and consider turning away the opportunity. Did you feel an inward shift?

Which consideration made you feel peaceful, happy, or relaxed?

Which consideration made you feel tense, uneasy, or agitated?

Did you hold your breath when considering either thought?

The thought that made you feel relaxed or at ease is your true desire and more than likely the choice you should make.

Sometimes you will get an equal feeling for either option. For example, my husband was “invited” to attend a meeting at work. It was not mandatory and he really didn’t want to go, but there were certain expectations of him to be there. He did the above exercise and noticed that one choice did not generate any more feeling than the other. In cases like this, I suggest that you consider yourself first—I know that’s not easy for empaths who come from a co-dependent society or family. Decide which choice brings you the least amount of personal stress or inconvenience. If my husband were to attend that meeting I just mentioned, it would put him in the afternoon traffic and take him more than an hour to drive twelve miles home. This would cause him to rearrange or cancel his plans to work out and get some much-needed exercise. If your decision does not have a personal stress factor involved, then consider how others would benefit by your participation and go from there.

Make sure that your choices are always aligned with your true feelings/inner guidance and not by your emotions or someone’s neediness.

The Ascension Process is an Opportunity of Great Spiritual Growth

It was with much delight and gratitude that I was reading Yvonne’s new book. It really explains what is going on in the universe, our planet, and with ourselves. The provided information and tools will be very helpful for all readers to heal the mindset of separation and transform unresolved personal issues and emotions. It is important to understand the ascension process which comes after resurrection, but there is no resurrection until something—the EGO—dies. The author understands, that the process might be scary at times, but is a guide through this challenging time. We are following Jesus and other spiritual masters if we embrace that this process is an opportunity of great spiritual growth.

Thanks for explaining the walk-in of LavendarRose, all readers will benefit from her teachings and I highly recommend to honor this information by working with all the valuable prayers, exercises, affirmations, links, quotes, and the wonderful vibration of this masterpiece.
