Read the post "Empaths R Us" by Patti Foy to learn how she used drugs and alcohol to cope with being emotionally sensitive.

I am thrilled to see this issue is being addressed. I myself am extremely empathic, always have been and I did eventually turn to alcohol, then drugs to help me tune out the sensory overload I was experiencing. After getting sober I went back to school for my Master's degree in Community Counseling. I found very few coworkers or peers who understand the concept of the Highly Sensitive Person, but a vast number of clients who, in their own ways, described being such an individual. I do hope that professionals will begin to open their minds and accept this truth so they can begin to incorporate it into their practice. Clients who are financially well to do tend to have access to such individuals, but the poor and disenfranchised (who are often incredibly intuitive) do not have the same opportunity. I have been researching ways to mentor these individuals on a pro bono basis, but am needing to research liability, accreditation and other business end issues.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading your book and thank you for making this information available,

Thanks for posting your excellent comment here on my blog, Jenny. I, too, wish there was a way to offer help to under-sourced empaths. I plan to get my book into the public library system so they can at least access to this information. That will start them on a path having some understanding about what they are dealing with. Perhaps the counseling community will soon wake up and learn about empathy fatigue.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for stopping by.
