See Caron's blog at http://academyforcoachingparents.com
  • Saturday, March 12 - Why do caregivers burn out? Why do doctors and therapists prescribe drugs for a condition they do not recognize as empathy fatigue? Dr. Goode gives the perfect description of how an empathic person such as a healer or counselor picks up the energy of the clients they care for. Radio Show with Dr Goode & Shelagh Jones

Why do caregivers burn out?
Why do doctors and therapists prescribe drugs for a condition they do not recognize as empathy fatigue?

Dr. Goode gives the perfect description of how an empathic person such as a healer or counselor picks up the energy of the clients they care for. Your body and mind can tell you when the session has gone on long enough and needs to end. An empath must care for her own self when trying to help others.

Learn what Dr. Goode says when asked by host Shelagh Jones @SpiritusShelagh if most doctors and therapists recognize the symptoms of compassion fatigue and what diagnosis they might give and what treatments they might suggest. I think you will find the answers very revealing in this fascinating interview with Caron, who wrote the foreword to the book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You at http://tinyurl.com/EmpathAmazon.

Characteristics of An Empath

Empaths are loving, caring, kind people who want to help others. They are often found doing volunteer work and may serve others through emotionally-demanding careers as childcare givers, medical professionals, hospice workers, midwives, and such. Most empaths came in with a mission to heal people, animals, plants, and the planet. As healers, many have taken on so much external energy that they spend most of their time trying to clear unwanted energy and recuperate from the last episode that “blew their doors off.”

Here are a few characteristics of empaths who have not learned to filter out other people’s emotions or manage their own energy:
  • You constantly feel overwhelmed with emotions and you may cry a lot, feel sad, angry, or depressed for no good reason. You may be tempted to think you are crazy for having random mood swings and bouts of unexplained fatigue. If you are a woman, it’s like having PMS all the time! Unrestrained empathy can cause a person to manifest symptoms similar to bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder.
  • You drop by the store feeling great, but once you get in a crowd you start feeling down, angry, sad, or overwhelmed. You feel you must be coming down with something so you decide to go home and rest.
  • If you’ve found that you can’t be in public without becoming overwhelmed you may start to live the life of a hermit. But, even at home, you get depressed when you watch the news and you cry while watching a movie. You feel horrible when a commercial for the Humane Society shows animals that need a home. You may rescue more animals than you can possibly care for.
  • You feel sorry for people no matter who they are or what they have done. You feel the need to stop and help anyone in your path. You can’t pass by a homeless person without giving him money—even if you don’t have it to spare.
  • Many empaths are overweight. When they absorb stressful emotions, it can trigger panic attacks, depression as well as food, sex, and drug binges. Some may overeat to cope with emotional stress or use their body weight as a shield or buffer. In Chapter 9 of Yvonne Perry’s book, she shows how to use light as protection.
  • • Most empaths have the ability to physically and emotionally heal others by drawing the pain or ailment out of the sick person and into their own bodies. For obvious reasons, this is not recommended unless you know how to keep from becoming ill in the process.
  • From chest pains and stomach cramps to migraines and fever, you manifest symptoms without contracting an actual illness. Later, you learn that your “ailment” coincided with the onset of a friend or family member’s illness.
  • No one can lie to you because you can see through their façade and know what they really mean. You may even know why they lied.
  • People—even strangers—open up and start volunteering their personal information. You may be sitting in the waiting room minding your own business and waiting your turn when the person next to you starts sharing all kinds of personal information. You didn’t ask them to and they never considered that you might not want to hear about their drama. People may feel better after speaking with you, but you end up feeling worse because they have transferred their emotional pain to you.
  • Some empaths don’t do well with intimate relationships. Constantly taking on their partner’s pain and emotions, they may easily get their feelings hurt, desire to spend time alone rather than with the partner, feel vulnerable when having sex, and feel that they have to continually retrieve their own energy when it gets jumbled with that of their partner. They may be so afraid of becoming engulfed by another person that they close up emotionally just to survive.
  • The ill, the suffering, and those with weak boundaries are drawn to the unconditional understanding and compassion an empath emits without even being aware of it. Until you learn how to shut out the energy of others, you may have a pretty miserable existence in which you feel like you have to be entirely alone in order to survive.
It’s easy to see why being an empath is often very draining. No wonder that over time, some folks shut down their empathic ability. And, with that, they also shut down a vital part of their divine guidance system. Learn how to manage the amount of info-energy you receive and hear more of what is really important.

What Is an Empath?

Empathy is a trait that most humans have; however not everyone labels themselves an empath or sees themselves having psychic abilities. Everyone is born with intuitive skills although some societies do not acknowledge or encourage the development of them—sometimes the family that the empath is born into hinders the advancement of these spiritual gifts.

For years while in the constraints of organized religion, I didn’t know I was an empath. I had never heard the term, but I tried to help people understand and accept my spiritual “gift.” Those who witnessed my intercessory prayer efforts didn’t understand what was going on and very few desired to pray with the intensity that I did. I still wonder how many prayer warriors are empaths who simply don’t know why they have mysterious illnesses and feel drained all the time. When I let the word out that I was writing a book on this topic, people started coming out of the woodwork, asking questions, relating their “ah ha” moments, and willing to share their stories as empaths. Alas, I found that we empaths are plenteous in number!

The word “empath” may be a new term to some, but an ever-increasing number of people are reporting that they are sensitive to all types of energy, including those produced by other humans, the environment, electromagnetic frequencies, geophysical stress, and even non-physical beings. Being empathic simply means you are able to pick up on the energy of others—we can all do that to some degree—but some people are so sensitive to environmental stimuli and the emotional energy of others that it causes disturbances in their health and life. Empirical evidence suggest that some people seem to have unique variations in their central nervous system that cause them to have an unusual sensitivity to light, smell, sound, taste, and touch, and may be very intuitive. Some are so detrimentally affected that they rarely go into public because they feel overwhelmed by the energy they pick up. These highly-sensitive individuals are referred to as empaths.

Anywhere there is a crowd of people, there is abundant energy, both positive and negative. Those who assist with victim protection, do police or detective work, have served in war zones, operate as healers or psychics, or have careers at hospitals, clinics, or hospice centers deal with an overload of emotional energy from trying to help people. Many of them feel depleted, overwhelmed, nervous, depressed, or angry much of the time; they may feel as though someone is watching or following them, or have a difficult time finding peace of mind. They may not know they are carrying or attaching to someone else’s energy, but would love to stop the emotional, physical, and mental turmoil they encounter on a regular basis. That’s why I wrote the book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You.

By setting healthy boundaries and developing emotional intelligence, you can manage your own energy and discern what others are feeling without actually having to suffer for it! In fact, with a little more information, you will be able to turn this “curse” into a gift that can ease the emotional and physical pain of others.

Seasonal Depression for the Empath Indicates Positive Change Occurring

A friend wrote me about how bad the seasonal depression has been in the north this winter. It has been one of the coldest and seemingly longest winters on record, so it’s understandable that the lack of sunlight would make any of us feel down. But my friend also was discouraged about his financial situation and wants to make a career change. He is in his early 40s and going through that mid-point opportunity (some call it mid-life crisis) where we all tend to evaluate what we have accomplished in life and where we are headed next.

The part of his letter really that touched my heart was when he said he thought his desires weren’t answered by God or Jesus, or the Universe because he’s not as good a Christian as he used to be. He also wondered if there might be some sort of black cloud or curse that keeps his deepest desires and prayers from being answered.

First, let me say that there is no condemnation in Christ. You do not need to feel guilty for anything or punish yourself for what you have or have not done in the past. Only this moment matters and this NOW point is where you begin your new life.

Humans have free will, which means we can choose and create the life we want and the Universe will support us on that path. The Universe is impartial about the nature of our requests and will give us exactly what we believe we can have. It's a matter of clearly stating what we want, and feeling as if it has already occurred, that will help us manifest positive change.

I recommend Greg Braden's book, Spontaneous Healing of Belief, and Luis Angel Diaz' book, Memory in the Cells, to help people process what they are going through and get aimed in a new direction.

The entire earth is going through a shift in consciousness. Egypt took action to get out from under the oppression she had been under for eons. The people became so dissatisfied with how things were, they overcame their fears (even of death) and allowed their new-found bravery to carry them through on the wings of a miracle. This is a physical manifestation that represents what all of us long for—freedom to be who we truly are and live a fulfilling life. That same miracle is waiting to fly us to our dreams.

The economy is another manifestation that shows how our thinking is changing on a broad scale. We are done with being under the burdens someone else has imposed upon us—whether that is our government, our family of origin, or our limiting beliefs passed to us from religion. We are gaining our courage to say "no" to whatever robs us of our joy. These internal and external shifts are bringing understanding and insight of what we need to do next to reach our goals. The collective desire of humans is desperately reaching for healing and freedom. The momentum is already in place, so we simply need to jump in and say, “Me too!”.

We all have dark clouds or shadow sides that must be brought to the light. Feeling guilty or ashamed or like you should be punished for "sins" is a lie of the ego (some call it the devil, but I’ll let you decide what you believe about that). It serves no good purpose. Every creation of God/Goddess deserves to enjoy the best life possible. As we release our wounds of the past, we let go of burdens and begin to see a bright future ahead for us as individuals, families, and the earth.

No worries about your age. You have the rest of your earth years to bring about your new prosperous and happy lifetime. I turned 40 the year I began my breakthrough. My life looked like a total mess at the time, but I kept pushing through the hard crust like a seeding trying to reach the sunlight.

Things are sprouting and opening up for everyone who is willing to give change a chance, so don't give up. Pursue your personal healing for this is where the miracle begins. The depression we feel is simply a catalyst for change. Sometimes we only change when it becomes too uncomfortable to stay where and how we are.
The change we desire is possible, but our focus needs to be on clearing and decluttering our emotional and mental fields so the light can shine through and direct you. The exercises in my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You (http://tinyurl.com/EmpathAmazon) can help.

We are the only species who prevents our own success. But, we can also make miracles happen.

Hugs, love, and light for all!

Radio Show with Joanne Sprott

Some folks can't even watch TV commercials for the Humane Society without becoming emotional. They certainly can't watch the evening news. Just imagine how tragic world events affect energy-sensitive people!

They are emotionally devastated even though they live on the other side of the world and didn't personally know any of the victims.

Joanne Sprott (@muselady11) hosted Yvonne Perry as her guest on Beyond Words Radio Show. Perry and Goode are the authors of Whose Stuff Is This?, a guidebook to help empathic people set loving boundaries for others' emotional energies.

Learn why Yvonne wrote this book, what the book can do for you, and how to tell if you have the intuitive gift of empathy. Know what this gift looks like when unrestrained as well as how it can be used to help others.

Being Non-Resistant Means Never Having to Say You’re Sorry

I remember the line from Erich Segal's Love Story: "Love means never having to say you’re sorry."

That’s true because love never perceives itself as being wronged. If you never perceive attack, you will have no need to forgive, defend, retaliate, or feel sorry for yourself. What a freeing way to live! This is the embodiment of the often misunderstood feat of “turning the other cheek.” We’ve often thought that phrase meant that it is honorable to let people walk all over us. Turning the other cheek actually means standing in your place of power and letting things flow through you without even moving the needle on your “who gives a crap?” meter. You simply avoid giving away your power to anything negative. How? By paying attention to what you are experiencing at any given moment and not pushing against it. This state of allowing permits you to acknowledge your emotions—whether pleasant or not—and look for the gift or lesson each situation offers.

We resist because we are fearful or in denial. Perhaps we are afraid to feel, or worry that our emotions will take over. Quite the opposite is true. Our emotions, when stuffed, are silently taking over our health. Being resistant blinds us to possibilities and solutions and causes us to shut down. Our body may feel tight, tense, or lethargic; our emotions may feel heavy, sad, or angry. This causes us to attract more negativity and pretty soon we are stuck.

So, the next time you are about to get mad, judge, or resist, stop and accept yourself, the other person, and situation as it is. It doesn’t mean you condone it. It means you are accepting its reality instead of denying or fighting it.

If something is upsetting you, deal with it quickly. Acknowledge and release your feelings before they drag you down. That way, you can be present in every moment as you bring your attention and awareness to each thought, feeling, and activity as it is occurring. If you notice you are in a state of resistance, go to Chapter 9 of my book, Whose Stuff Is This? and do some of the exercises that bring peace of mind, balance, and well-being.

When something upsetting is occurring for you, there are three choices you can make:
  1. Resist, deny, avoid, or ignore it (not recommended!)
  2. Communicate, ask for what you need, and be willing to alter what you can about the situation. If another person involved will not cooperate with your peace-making efforts, cut ties with the offender or remove yourself from the unhealthy environment. Let go of the need to change people. The only person you can change is yourself. Find a different job, move out, or do whatever you need to bring about a better living/working condition and peace of mind. You do not have to complain, suffer, or play the role of a victim. Instead, look for new opportunities and relationships with uplifting and positive people that will support and nurture you on your spiritual path.
  3. Accept the situation once you have done all you can to remedy it. This does not mean you are giving up or surrendering to something you abhor. It means you have released all the negative charge surrounding the situation and come to a place of peace that will allow you to remain where you are without suffering, stuffing, or seething. This option is best employed when you are dealing with an uncontrollable situation such as the death of a loved one or the termination of a close relationship.
When you focus on cultivating and integrating a peaceful mindset into your life, the universe will guide you to the resources that support your goal of entering into the flow of who you really are. Undoubtedly, your intuition led you to this blog today. You know how to access your internal guidance!

When you are non-resistant, you feel lighter and it’s easier to be joyful and allow what you really want to flow into your life. My wish is that you will recognize your own power and live at a blissful level of unconditional, non-resistant happiness.
