Indigo Kids by Maureen Dawn Healy

The following is excerpted from The Energetic Keys to Indigo Kids available from New Page Books.

“Indigos are all already aware they are different.” —Nancy Tappe

Indigos are “highly sensitive with a warrior personality,” explained Doreen Virtue, author of The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children, in the documentary The Indigo Evolution. I wholeheartedly agree. Indigo kids are unique in the fact that they hold two opposing qualities simultaneously: high sensitivity and fierceness. So they are extremely sensitive like the “highly sensitive children,” defined by Elaine Aron in her book, The Highly Sensitive Child, but what differentiates them is their personality. I prefer to use the concept of “the indigo personality” to capture their shared characteristics, such as:

• Are highly creative.
• Are extremely energetic.
• Are gifted in certain areas (for example, mathematical genius, poor reading skills).
• Have a need for fairness.
• Prize honesty (almost above all else).
• Feel equal to authority.
• Hate rules.
• Refuse to do certain things.
• Want special treatment.
• Are strong-willed.
• Waver between grandiosity and low self-esteem.
• May be prone to depression.
• Have high sensitivity (sounds, smells, touch, sights).
• Have sharpened intuition.
• Don’t respond to authoritative parenting.
• Have built-in BS detector (immediately know dishonesty).
• Tend to leave things incomplete.
• Cannot be rushed.
• May have fetish (for example, only wants to wear princess dresses).
• Like playing alone (unless with other indigos).
• Get “hooked” on things and can’t let go.
• Are independent at times, clingy at other times.
• Seek meaningful friendships.

Understanding the core characteristics of the indigo personality is very empowering. You no longer feel alone. Having worked with thousands of indigos, I can say that these attributes animate themselves differently in children but the indigo short summary is this:

• High sensitivity.
• Giftedness (in one area).
• Incredible creativity.
• Strong energy of defiance.
• Inner motivation.
• Intuitive intelligence (very high!).

When I was told early on that I beat to my own drummer I took it in stride. Now, I realize that I was merely beating to an indigo drum—which is unique, unusual to the mainstream, and deeply powerful as a force for change. Indigos see, feel, and experience life differently than their more mainstream counterparts. They tend to have an unusually high level of creativity, sensitivity, giftedness, and angry energy to channel.

This angry or warrior energy that defines many indigos isn’t a bad thing. It is the energy that breaks down broken systems (think: public school systems) and creates better ways of doing things. Of course, the challenge is to raise indigo kids to use their incredibly sensitive, highly responsive, and fierce energy as force for good.

Parenting indigos, especially if you aren’t “indigo-like,” can be a real challenge. Over the years, I have had countless clients come to me because one parent was indigo-ish and the other thought his or her child was just given to them by Martians. They just didn’t get it. Usually it started out like: “What is going on with my child? She’s as sweet as pie one moment, and then next it’s a full-blown tantrum.”

So I usually had parents detail the itty-bitty things of their parent-child interaction, and I served as the bridge to translate from indigo to adult. Then, they’d have an “a-ha” and say, “Oh my—that’s what was going on.” As soon as you know the energetic triggers of indigos you can stop bumping into them unknowingly and experiencing such upset all around.

Jamal’s Journey

One of my first Los Angeles child clients was a 5-year-old named Jamal. His mom, Lisa, contacted me because she discovered Jamal was actually highly sensitive. One instance stood out for her.

Jamal was attending a private kindergarten in Los Angeles, and he was the only African American in his grade. One school project was to bring in a baby photo and post it on the wall, where all the kids got to guess “who’s who.” Jamal knew this wasn’t going to work out for him. Jamal is very observant and aware of life, including his ethnicity, and that this was an unfair game. He told his teachers. Mrs. Smith, his main teacher, said she would work on making it fair. So she printed out famous baby photos of African Americans and decided to add them to the game. On the day of this game, all Jamal’s peers picked him out first and he got really upset. Jamal began crying and left the classroom, refusing to return. He said, “Mom, tell everyone it’s not fair and that’s why I am so upset.”

Jamal was clear from the beginning he disliked this game, felt unheard, and had a sense that it wasn’t going to work for him. His teacher, from her “older perspective,” couldn’t really understand how to create an effective solution. Ultimately, Jamal got triggered by the unfairness of this situation and couldn’t contain his emotions. Indigos as a whole cannot ignore their emotions but must learn effective outlets for them. Jamal fits the indigo profile to a “T,” with his high sensitivity, strong emotions, and warrior energy standing up for what he saw as an injustice. He refused to go back into that classroom and Lisa picked him up.

How to Cope With Emotions and Reduce Anxiety

By Margaret Sweet

Emotions are feelings that cause reactions. When a person feels sad, regret, guilt, shame, angry, hurt, resentful, or rejected they tend to allow these feelings to cause them to slip into depression. Such intense emotions are the leading cause of anxiety, panic attacks, and other disorders. People find it hard to cope with emotional reactions because we have lived in a world of misconceptions and for century's society and others have told people "Big boys don't cry." Alternatively, they say "Let it go" when someone is emotionally hurt, thus encouraging people to repress true hurt feelings. Repressing feelings literally means to block, limit, or internalize.

When a person represses true feelings for long periods it results to the creation of a mental disorder in most instances. People who tend to hold in anger and resentment will express anger outwardly or rely on drugs or alcohol in some instances to cope with the buried feelings. To overcome emotional conflicts we all have to learn how to express our true feelings appropriately and learn to recognize how to notice the difference between assumptions and true feelings.

How to cope with intense emotions

When you first notice that, you feel upset, take a step back and examine your thoughts. Emotions are feelings that cause a reaction when thoughts encourage feelings. For example, if you were assuming that someone is judging you, you would feel anxious as a result. The reason this reaction occurs is that the emotion or feeling is untrue. These shaky assumptions lead people to think they can read other people's minds when they cannot, so to assume people who do not even know is judging you, is making a false statement against others. Challenging the thought will help you to put the thought into a new perspective.

When we are untrue to ourselves emotional, conflicts result. I help people recognize assumptions that cause them to feel upset. To change how you think is the first step you must take to change how you react. The next step is challenging the fears.

Fear

People who live in fear struggle with handling emotional reactions well. Irrational fear resulting from assuming habits, worry and anxiety are often caused from a notion that a person is in real danger even when there is no danger present. They live in the "fight or flight" way of thinking that causes distress and panic to escalate. The key to reducing anxiety and panic is to overcome the notion you are in real danger when danger isn't present.

Emotions are feelings and causes emotional sensations when a person feels sad, happy, excited, angry, joyful, etc. by learning to accept that every one of us has real feelings, it will be easier to cope with emotions. Learn how to cope with emotions to reduce mental disorder and other problems by considering effective cognitive behavioral therapy, life skills course, mastery skills programs, and subliminal therapy.

What Kind of Empath Are You?

By Ronni Ann Hall

Are you an empath? You know you are sensitive and your strongest psychic sense is in feeling. For fun, take the quiz to find out which kind you are.

Circle in your head or write down which applies.

1. You come down with a sudden, horrible stomach ache. Logical mind says it was a bad lunch or the flu going around, but then your dog enters the room and pukes on the carpet. She looks a little green around the edges. (physical or animal empath)

2. While shopping at the nearby Walmart, you enter the frozen food section and want to burst out into tears. You feel overwhelming, deep sadness and loneliness. (emotional empath or allergy to poorly designed boxed foods)

3. While relaxing on the couch you suddenly hear words come from your dog, "I want to go for a walk now." (animal empath or the result of smoking too many mushrooms)

4. Sitting in the backyard you feel a wave of joy come over you and a sense of peace, and you have an urge to smell the rose bush (nature empath, or the mushrooms are still doing their stuff from the day before)

5. You feel down and angry when two minutes before you felt peaceful. Your closest friend then calls and says he is feeling down and angry. (emotional empath or you just shopped at a crowded Walmart)

6. Two days before a major earthquake hits another country you have nightmares of earthquakes, anxiety or feelings of doom (mission empath or watching too many movies before bed)

7. You know that one fern plant needs more water and to be placed in a sunnier window (nature empath or you've read a lot of books on houseplants)

8. You receive strong messages or channelings that will help the world regarding self-esteem (mission empath or still feel the effects of the mushrooms)

9. You enter a hospital and feel fear, sadness, anxiety. You walk by one room and feel a pain in your side (physical empath or fear of hospitals)

If you circled one or more for nature empath: NATURE EMPATH you're tuned into the Nature Spirits and Fairies. You would excel at healing with Nature.

If you circled one or more for emotional empath: EMOTIONAL EMPATH you're tuned into the emotions of others. You just need to work on finding good tools and even better boundaries to take advantage of this gift.

If you circled one or more for physical empath: PHYSICAL EMPATH you're tuned into the physical ailments of others. You will just need to discern how to get rid of the feelings and not take it on. You'd make a wonderful medical intuitive.

If you circled one or more for animal empath: ANIMAL EMPATH you're tuned into animals and can help them greatly if you nurture this ability.

If you circled one or more for mission empath: MISSION EMPATH you're tuned into the world and your gifts will be used to help the planet on a greater scale.

If you circled mushrooms: Whoa! Where did you get that stuff?

The Empath Blues: 4 Ways to Relieve Emotional Fatigue

By Elise Lebeau

According to wikipedia, "decisional fatigue refers to the deteriorating quality of decisions made by an individual, after a long session of decision making". This concept has been studied extensively in psychology where people who have to make a lot of decisions as part of their daily job, like judges for example, become worn out over time and tend to make poorer decision later in the day. The mind becomes exhausted and has a hard time evaluating trade offs, a critical skill in decision making.

In a similar vein, empaths can become overly activated by the constant emotional information that they have to process. This is especially true for Impaired empaths who have a hard time regulating the influx of emotions they pick up from other people. Overtime, their ability to appropriately respond to emotions can become erratic, leaving them feeling powerless and depressed.

Under a spell of the empath blues, you might start to feel sad without knowing why. You are also more likely to feel depressed later in the day, waking up fine in the morning but experiencing a decline in your positive emotions as the day goes by. The empath blues is typically temporary but can become chronic if left unattended. Please note that anyone who feels depressed over a long period of time might be suffering from clinical depression and should immediate seek medical help as well as therapeutic counseling.

So what can you do when you find yourself in the throes of the empath blues? There is a very common misconception that the remedy for emotional fatigue is to try to be "happier". Meaning that you should try to think positively, even though you feel utterly crappy. Have you ever been with someone who was trying to cheer you up while you felt sad? Despite their best efforts, you kinda want them to shut up and go away.

This reaction makes perfect sense when you consider that alleviating emotional fatigue requires emotional quiet, which is the absence of strong emotions. Feeling happy is a strong emotion and strong emotions, whether positive or negative, are exactly what caused emotional fatigue in the first place! Not only that but trying to cheer up on the spot takes a huge amount of effort when you are feeling sad. You're trying to jump from one end of the emotional spectrum (sadness) into the opposite end (happiness) while being exhausted, so you're more likely to fall flat on your face mid jump.

Most empaths are not familiar with the state of emotional quiet required to address emotional fatigue. They are so used to feel tugged in all kinds of emotional direction that feeling nothing is often equated with feeling dead or empty. They wonder if something's wrong. And yet, this is no different than sleep for the body! We need down time where we let out body, mind and emotions rest.

Fortunately, empath are often very intuitive beings. They feel drawn to what is good for them. That's why if you're an empath you'll probably recognize some of your own urges in the 4 most effective ways to relieve emotional fatigue.

Being alone: Empaths need time by themselves where they are less likely to be tuning into the emotions of others around them. It doesn't mean you're anti-social or that you don't like people! It just means you need to refuel before going back out into the world. Make sure you have plenty of alone time when you're doing something that is not emotional, such as knitting, gardening, cooking, etc. I like to play video games which requires strategy but has no emotional triggers for me. Be creative!

Being in nature: Many empaths report feeling most at peace in nature, among trees and in large bodies of water like the ocean or a lake. With good reasons! Trees and water provide a natural "white noise" when it comes to emotional vibration. It's like wearing a noise canceling headset to drown out the emotions of people. I walk 5 miles a week in the forest around my house which rejuvenates and energizes me for the day.

Being physical active: Physical activity can provide a great buffer against emotional fatigue by taking your focus away from emotions and into your own physical body. For our purposes, the physical activity needs to be challenging enough that it requires your full attention. Rock climbing and yoga are my favorite activities to get emotionally quiet.

Meditation: Meditation provides a powerful way to guide your focus away from other people. This can be very challenging for empaths who tend to always tune into others. It can feel unnatural or difficult at first. But being able to create a quiet space within, whether by focusing on your breath or by following a guided audio meditation, can give you the space you need to rest both your mind and your delicate emotional system.

Are Your Children Empaths? Teach Them How To Manage Their Emotional Intelligence

By Elise Lebeau

We are all born with the ability to sense emotions in others. It's is a basic survival skill for humans and animals. This ability usually subsides in childhood as we learn to focus more on verbal cues than emotional ones.

Empaths, on the other hand, have a heightened sensitivity to other people's emotions that keeps developing over time. As other kids stop picking up emotional signals, empath children become totally overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of emotional information that they receive in social settings.

Since most parents do not know if they are empaths, they don't recognize the signs in their kids. It also prevents them for effectively teaching their kids how to manage emotional overflow. For a more in depth discussion on resources for adult empaths, you can read my articles on this topic here.

Emotional Intelligence is defined as "the ability, capacity, or skill to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of one's self, of others, and of groups" (Salovey and Mayer, 1990).

When you teach your children how to manage their Empath skills, you are developing their Emotional Intelligence.

There are three fundamental concepts that need to be addressed in order to effectively manage emotional information.

1. Empowerment: Do you control your empath skills or do they control you (curse or blessing?)
2. Centeredness: Can you always hear your own internal self above all (raise above the chaos)
3. Flow: Does emotional information come in AND out freely (do you have an outlet?)

Is your child an empath?

Children have a different way of handling their empath abilities. Their range of available response is smaller, so they typically pick very quiet (as a way to calm down the emotional chaos they feel) or acting out (as a way to be louder than the emotional noise).

Keep in mind that children learn how to manage their empath abilities by watching you handle yours. If you're an empath but don't know how to handle it, get help for yourself first!

These are behaviors I have observed in empath children who don't know how to handle their abilities:

•Gets unusually quiet (often seen as shyness) around crowds but is fine with the immediate family or smaller groups. Your child is trying to feel empowered and centered by withdrawing from the world. •Gets physically or verbally out of control around people but is mellow at home. Your child is trying to find an outlet to the overwhelming flow of incoming emotions.
•Resists going to bed or wakes up often. Your child is trying to stay centered while surrounded by the emotional activity of adults.
•Catches every illness available (cold, flu, ear infections, etc.). Your child is trying to feel empowered in shutting down unwanted emotional activity. Being sick is often the only way a child can use to withdraw from social situations.

Of course, this describes about 85% of children. I believe that most children do suffer from a mismanagement of their empath skills. I also believe that more and more empath children are born every day. So 85% is not a shocking number to me.

The bottom line is: can you help your child have a happier life by using empath tools? If it does help, then you're on the right track!

Disclaimer: This checklist is not a diagnostic or treatment tool. I am not a doctor or a mental health professional. Some of the characteristics of empaths can be diagnosed as ADD, agoraphobia or clinical depression. Contact your health care professional if you have any questions, need diagnostic or treatment for a mental health issue.

In order to help your child, you need tools that address each of the three concepts (empowerment, centeredness and flow). This is a technique I developed with my son.  Empath Anchoring Technique:

When your child gets overwhelmed, she often just needs a point of reference to stay grounded. You can be that anchor.

1. Calm your own emotions. You can't be a positive anchor if you're upset or angry.
2. Tell her quietly "Look me in the eyes" (point to your eyes) and put your hand on her chest. Make sure you have eye contact for the next step!
3. Tell her "We're going to take 5 breaths together and count them". Let your child breathe however she wants. You're just accompanying her, counting out loud with each exhalation.

Breathing quiets down emotional noise, re-centers the mind and helps children feel empowered by having something they can do when they feel uncomfortable. Include empath anchoring it in your night time routine!
