Emotionally and Physically Detaching: A Tool for Empaths

An empath's best coping method is the ability to emotionally and physically detach from others or a situation. An empath is a feeler, but we know when we’ve reached our limit. If the emotional burden of another becomes too great, we can pull away without being hateful, angry, or upset with that person. It is an essential act of self-preservation that must be utilized.

I find that being in a crowd for a long period of time is still overwhelming for me sometimes. So, for social gatherings where there will be a lot of unfamiliar energy, I either stay near someone I know or engage in conversation with someone whose energy feels good—I generally gravitate toward children! If I start to feel overwhelmed, I’ll find a corner where I can observe the action without being antisocial or placing myself right in the middle of things. That allows me to take breaks without being missed while I go outside or to a quiet room to get away from the cacophony of energy. If my husband goes with me to a social event and I start feeling over stimulated, I can stand near him or hold his hand for a moment to help ground myself with his energy. If I do this several times, he knows I am ready to leave and will look for a way to politely say our goodbyes. If I am going to a function without my husband, I may drive my own car so I’m not stranded if I need to leave.

Characteristics of an Empath: Taking on the Physical Pain of Another Person

When I first began to realize that being an empath was having a detrimental effect upon me, I started using some of the methods that I describe in Chapter 9 of my book, Whose Stuff Is This? ~ Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You, to keep from picking up the energy of others. But, there were still times when I was broadsided—like the time when our friends, Sally and Angie, were at our house having dinner with me and my husband. Here's that story...

I was talking about my work as a writer when all of a sudden my throat closed up and a stabbing pain hit me in my neck and upper chest. I grabbed my throat in a panic that caused Randy and Angie to think I was choking. I couldn’t swallow or speak to tell them what was wrong. Thankfully, Sally is an intuitive healer and recognized that I was not choking, but needed to be released from a psychic energy attack. She worked to clear me and when I could speak again, I had insight as to what had just happened. I had been considering ghostwriting a book for a man whose father had witnessed the assassination of President Kennedy. He was about to report the culprit to the authorities when he was attacked from behind, stabbed in the throat, and left to die in an alley. The client wanted me to write about what his father had shared with him in the months prior to his death. I had picked up the traumatic energy of a ghost!

That event was a big eye-opener for me. This business of being an empath had gone too far and it had to stop! I adopted new ways to protect myself with grounding and centering exercises that I share in Chapter 9 of my book for empaths. I meditated to receive energy from higher realms and learned how to run my own energy through my chakras.

I also detached from the outcome of my prayers. If I prayed for anyone, I detached myself from the person’s energy and did not allow myself to become emotionally involved. I would offer the energy of healing, but I no longer attempted to know the plan for another person’s soul.

I no longer attempt to usurp the free will of others as I had many times in my religious prayer efforts when I was trying to save the world. Instead, I started sending people divine love and light—an energy that they could use however they and God chose. Since I was directing a higher energy rather than sending out my own energy, I was not taking on the detrimental energy my prayer recipients were releasing from their blocked chakras or cells.

Feeling the Energy of Certain Places

Mt. Shasta, the Himalayas, Sedona, and other places around the world have a high vortex of extraordinary energy that you can feel when you are there. As empaths, we can feel energy anywhere—good, bad, or indifferent. We even feel the energy at the Wal-Mart!
When some empaths walk into a shopping center they may suddenly get very sluggish because the energy is very heavy whenever people are making a lot of choices. Decisions about spending money, may generate a feeling of lack, anger, or fear. They see someone wearing a nice outfit and perhaps there is jealousy. There are a lot of negative or lower vibrations in public places—some tend to have more harmful or uncomfortable unpleasant energies than others. But, sensitive people can feel all of it.

It’s important to focus on the positive, uplifting energy of your own divinity within you whenever you are in public. Think of how you feel the wonderful divine energy when you are in the beauty of nature! Mentally go there to rejuvenate and renew yourself by feeling grateful, blessed, loved, and happy. By spending five minutes in your Sacred Heart Center before you leave home, you can carry this high-vibrational energetic signature with you all day. It will beam forth from your heart full of love. A cup that is overflowing cannot receive anything more, it must spill over. And, since your fullness is from an unlimited Source, you never have to run dry; you can continually be filled with Spirit.

Empaths and the Right Use of Energy

Training or draining. That’s the difference. An empath being drained can become an empowered empath through training to work with energy.

The right use of energy is all about cooperating with the law of attraction. We attract by default whether we intend to or not. We attract by our thoughts, feelings, attitudes, emotions, and words. The energetic frequency we’re sending to the universe says, “I want more of this: _______.”

So if you are worrying, you’re going to attract things that are a product of worry. If you are joyful you will attract more joy. If you are in a state of retaliation, then you’re going to attract more skirmishes. It’s when you get back into your heart center—that space where divine loves abides within you, that there’s no conflict. It’s all peace, love, light, health, joy, wealth, and prosperity. Everything begins to flow easily because you’re working with rather than against the universal laws of God. These apply to everyone regardless of background or religious beliefs, whether or not people recognize or notice the effects. The law of sowing and reaping is an energetic universal law. You get it back what you put out. So anytime you have something in your life that you don’t want, look at what you’re putting out. Energetically. What are you generating with your thoughts? What are you affirming with your beliefs? Those are the things that you are going to get back. If you are in that heart place center and you just send beams of love and light, guess what comes back to you? Beams of love and light!

Living in the joy of the now moment is really not as hard as we make it out to be. We say but there’s this problem or there’s that person in the way. No that’s a lie you are fabricating to keep from taking personal responsibility for your own behavior—including what you entertain in your mind and the limiting fear-based beliefs that are ruling your life. Those things are fabricated by our thoughts and beliefs, attitudes and feelings—by our domestication as Don Miguel Ruiz says in The Four Agreements.

Well we’re all in process; we’re all learning. Whatever we can do to share love and help one another, that’s what we want to do. Even though it may seem that I am preaching at you, I’m really trying to help you see that you are not a victim destined to a negative outcome. You have the power to change your own life. Once you learn to go within and commune with the divine wisdom available in the sacred heart, you can let that powerful energy flow from the highest source (your divine connection) and enjoy life. Then, you’ll have fewer problems as an empath.

Guard your heart, thoughts, and attitudes diligently. As the angels to help you change your detrimental beliefs and habits. It’s time for you to become an empowered person in control of your own destiny.

Do You Let People Drain Your Energy?

I was one who was an intercessor in the church and you can imagine the stuff I picked up praying for people. It almost killed me before I realized what was happening. If you are walking through the supermarket when all of a sudden you start feeling really sad or angry that’s not your stuff. You don’t have to carry that. You can simply visualize a hose sucking that detrimental energy out of you and your aura into a ball. Then imagine you are tossing that ball into the air while asking Saint Germaine to transmute it with the violent flame. It’s that simple and it happens immediately.

Now if you get a bad hit, say from somebody who is trying to drain your energy, you may suddenly start feeling sick, depressed, or angry. You don’t have to take that kind of abuse. If somebody was trying to break into your house you wouldn’t just stand there and open the door for them. You would barricade it, call the cops, or do whatever you needed to keep out the intruder. When you say NO to psychic vampires who are leeching off your energy, you are setting a boundary and saying, “This is my space, my stuff, and you stay out of it.” If people are trying to leech off your energy or trying to drain you or toss their sickness onto you, it’s just as rude as them coughing on you intentionally while knowing they have a virus. So you would stop that, wouldn’t you? Well, you can do the same thing energetically when somebody is trying to siphon from you. Talk to them and their guides spirit to spirit by imagining them sitting in front of you. Or write a letter and then burn it without giving it to them. This sets an energetic boundary and is very effective because we are one in spirit and we can speak to one another without having a conflict in person (or by phone, email, etc.) Everything is energy and what we’re learning is the right use of energy. Incorrect use of energy would be allowing it to drain you.

Many empaths go into the health care industry or are caregivers, who are among the sick and suffering all the time. Without proper education on how to manage energy, these precious souls burn out quickly; it can be extremely draining. How did Jesus, as an empath, manage to stay strong while in the midst of the sick and the outcast of society? How can you control how much of your energy you give away in these kinds of situations?

What was Jesus doing when he was not with his disciples or when he wasn’t with the crowds or teaching? The Bible says over and over again that he was praying. There’s the key, the spiritual connection. Jesus knew that he was one with God—a divine individuation of God, just as we are. Even though he knew this, he also realized he had to maintain his connection in the midst of all the distractions and the sickness and suffering around him. He knew that his success was in his spiritual purification processes and his prayer effort that enhanced his divine connection. He had to keep that line open at all times in order to know the will of God in each situation. That’s his example to us; it’s a gift. Anytime we are feeling out of sync or feeling drained it’s an indication or a message that we need to pray or do some deep breathing, go for a walk in nature, or do something to pull away from the crowd and connect with Spirit.

Is the Energy of Others Draining You?

Empaths are reporting that they can sense a deep emotional connection to other people. Sometimes it’s very draining and they are not sure how to deal with it.

Empaths are energy sensitive beings; that is part of who we are and we’re always going to be that way. However, there is a way you can filter the energy and calm it down and have your own personal peace so you are able to radiate peace from within. In chapter 9 of Whose Stuff Is This?, I give a list of things that people can do to help ground and center the energy they are dealing with and I give some visualization techniques that can be used to work with energy. People have reported that these exercises are really helping them. That’s because they raise the vibration not only of your body but also your auric field and your soul’s vibration. So the detrimental things around you tend to bounce off.
If you are familiar with the Bible you may recall the scripture about putting up a shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the evil one. We’re not calling anyone evil but we do have an electromagnetic field around us that can be strengthened with some spiritual purification practices such as deep breathing, prayers or meditation, affirmations, or grounding and centering exercises. So when that detrimental energy comes to us it hits that field like a bubble, which is flexible and is not going to pop like a soap bubble. It’s more like amniotic fluid surrounding a baby; it cushions and protects the beautiful life within. It’s the same way with us; when our aura (field) is strengthened, we are not as impacted by the environment outside of our bubble.

Many times empaths allow their auras to be thin and they pick up a lot of stuff. They tend to mesh their our field with other people’s fields, especially on a crowded subway, on a bus, or in a shopping mall where there is a cacophony of energy running wild. These are the places where empaths are the most uncomfortable. When there is a large crowd of people or there is a large crowd of people in a situation where there is a lot of grief or mourning going on, we tend to pick that up quite easily.

Some of those exercises in my book will definitely help strengthen the aura. There are some practices on whosestuffisthis.com that will help people to be able to put up better boundaries. I’m not going to say protective barriers because we’re not walling off anybody and there’s really nothing to be protected from; it is a good practice to maintain your own energy field and body so you can continue to do the work that you’ve been called to do.

When I pick up something that I know is not mine, I realize now that I’ve gotten it for the purpose of transmuting that energy. One way to do that is to call on the ascended master Saint Germaine and the violent flame of transmutation. I imagine that any detrimental energy within me is being drawn outward and into a ball of light. It’s coming out of my field and out of my body into a ball of light. Then I toss the ball into the air and allow Saint Germaine to zap it with the violet flame and transmute it into love, joy, peace, happiness—all the positive things that we want more of on the planet. You’re using a higher frequency by calling on an ascended master. You are not keeping it in your body or in your field where it could to do more damage.

On whosestuffisthis.com there are resources, articles, visualizations, books, and other things that can help empaths start understanding how to use energy.

What Does It Mean to Be an Empath?

When we talk about empathy we’re saying that people have the ability to feel on behalf of another person. “I feel sorry for you.” or “I’m so sorry to hear that.”

When a highly sensitive person (empath) receives bad news they may take empathy to a whole new degree. They really do feel for you. In fact, they may feel the same emotional impact that you feel when you have a loss. They take it on as if it was their own grief. Or they may feel it in their body; if they are around someone who is sick, they may try to absorb that energy of sickness to transmute it.

Now the way empaths get into some trouble is by not being aware that they are an empath. They may not know what is happening to them; they just think they are very emotional or overly sensitive; they may get sick a lot. They don’t really understand that there is a spiritual reason and that they have been gifted with an ability that some people don’t have in order to help this earth become a better place.

Empaths many times take the suffering of others into their body to transmute it rather than working with higher energies that are available to help transmute detrimental energy. Anyone can work with ascending masters, angels, or archangels. We have a host of heavenly helpers in the spirit world who can assist us. These high-frequency beings need an anchor here on the earth and that’s where empaths and spiritually sensitive people come into play. We have signed up on a soul level before incarnating to be able to work with these divine helpers, but many times we get here in human form, and forgot why we are here. We get busy in mundane affairs of life and don’t spend time staying connected with our Source of strength; therefore, empaths suffer a lot.

The reason I wrote my book, Whose Stuff Is This? ~ Finding Freedom from the Detrimental Thoughts and Feelings of Those around You, is to help people find the freedom that comes from understanding the gift of empathy and knowing how to use it without paying a personal price. I published that book last year, 2011. Here we are a year later and I’m writing another book. It’s going to be like a sequel to the first book because now that we are in 2012, we are fully in what’s called the ascension or an awakening to oneness. It’s a shift into purer consciousness or purer thought and it’s affecting everything and everyone on the planet.

Empaths seem to feel the impact more keenly than others. They have more symptoms of the shift as we’re moving toward our authentic selves and things that no longer serve us are going away. My next book, Shifting into Purer Consciousness, will teach the right use of energy and give helpful tips to integrate higher cosmic frequencies that are affecting the earth during this 2012 (and beyond) shift.

The Purpose for the Gift of Empathy

The main reason empaths feel drained is because they are picking up negative energy from those around them. This is the slower-vibrating energy that we mentioned earlier this week. It’s not good or bad; it’s simply vibrating at a slower rate or frequency. We pick this up many times in order to transmute it, and free others from karma and suffering. That’s fine if you know how to do that, but you have got to keep your own auric field clear and your own chakras open in order to do this without bringing harm to your own body or causing your own emotions to go awry. One way to ensure that there’s nothing in you for this type of energy to resonate with is to continue with spiritual practices of purification such as deep breathing exercises, prayer, meditation, reading uplifting material, and other such practices.
My book, Whose Stuff Is This?, has an entire chapter of exercises you can do to ground your energy, stay centered, set boundaries, and clear the electromagnetic field that surrounds your body. We will do one of these clearing exercises in this session.
Many sacred warrior and wounded healer empaths may believe that healing others is a way to heal yourself and this is true, but this practice if done incorrectly can deteriorate the body and is not recommended because doing so takes away the learning experience of another person.
Empaths have duties such as assisting souls who are incarnating on the earth, healing people and animals, writing and teaching others, providing intuitive readings, changing the weather, working with the earth’s ley/gridlines, assisting souls who are crossing over into the afterlife, working with souls on the other side. Many empaths are also physic mediums who deliver psychic messages, and have many other spiritual tasks to perform. I plan to write a book (Shifting into Purer Consciousness: How to Embrace and Integrate Multidimensional Frequencies will be a self-help manual for dealing with the human experience as effected by spiritual transformation) about how to integrate accelerated frequencies—those frequencies that are vibrating faster—and how to work with those energies. Be on the lookout for that book in 2012.
The main thing that causes empaths to miss accomplishing their joyful, divine mission is the lack of forgiveness. Harboring resentment, attempting to retaliate, seeing yourself as a victim, and blaming others are signs of a soul that has a cluttered energy field. And, these things provide a nice incubator for detrimental energy. Remember, energy attracts more energy like itself. Empaths can’t keep from picking up energy—it’s part of our reason for being in body—but we can keep from carrying it and allowing it to drag us down or make us sick. That’s why it is necessary to talk about the importance of forgiveness. More on that in a few days, so stay tuned to this blog.

What Are Lower Vibrating Energies?

First of all, let me state that there is no “good” energy or “bad” energy. We put those labels on things using our human judgment of what we think is pleasant or unpleasant, desirable and undesirable. The frequency of an object, thought, or feeling is nothing more than how fast or slow it vibrates. It is what it is when we do not judge it. The fact remains that we are being urged to awaken to our authentic high-vibrating spiritual selves that only knows pure consciousness. This process requires that we deal with dense energy from the lower realms of consciousness.
We are so much more than we have realized. We have been afraid to know and use our creative power because we don’t want to be thought of a pious or arrogant. Actually, the opposite is true. Humility is power under spirit’s control—not self-abasement that comes from following the voice of ego. We have the very essence of God/Goddess within us. It’s time to decisively manage our energy and use the power of our thoughts to actively create the life and world peace we all seek.

Energy Resonation

Suppose you are in a music store where all is quiet. You pluck the E string on one guitar, and soon all the E strings on the other guitars in the store start to play. This is resonation and this is similar to what is happening to humanity. The earth is changing her vibrational pitch and we are aligning with it. Anything that is discordant with the new frequency must change. The Universe is not taking “no” for an answer regarding things in our lives and society that must be changed in order to accommodate this shift in vibration. We must shift whatever is not in alignment with the new frequency.
We are divinely connected to Source and one another; therefore, we pick up the thoughts, feelings, and energy of those around us in an effort to heal others. When we have lower vibrating energy such as resentment, fear, judgment, prejudice, a sense of entitlement or victimhood, unhealed emotional pain within us, we easily begin to vibrate at the same lower frequency of the energy that is being released in another person. The key here is to integrate anything that is not of a faster vibration of consciousness. When we are clean, clear, and aligned with the frequencies of Light and Love, there is nothing for the discordant energy to attach to.
In addition to this energetic cleansing, our chakras are opening up and psychic and spiritual gifts are coming forth. We are hearing, seeing, and having experiences in higher dimensions or levels of consciousness. We intuitively know when someone is lying to us, we are becoming healers, we are channeling our higher selves and ascended masters, and we are sharing information to help others get free in order to make the shift. This means we are having to deal with all the negative energy stuck in our chakras, body, and auric field. As others release their stuff, we need to make sure we don’t grab it and run with it, thinking it is our own. I’ve began a practice of giving “last rites” to any negative energy I am finished with. As part of the integration process we learned from Dr. Tom Goode in the telesummit, Empaths Shifting into 2012, I’m no longer using the terms “let it go” or “release.” Instead, I am transmuting or changing the slower-vibrating energy into faster-vibrating or purer energy of healing and love and peace, visualizing it falling to earth as golden, glittery sparkles of light to bless all. My intent is to have this exercise make living an authentic life is easier than ever. I encourage you to submit to the process of the refiner’s fire rather than resist it. I’ve had to do that very thing this week as I accepted and integrated a head cold.
The law of attraction and it applies to everyone regardless of whether or not we understand it. The law of attraction says that energy or vibration attracts similar energy. Like the guitars in the music store, we attract by resonation or according to what we think about, what we believe as truth, what is in our auric field, and how we fast our soul’s energy vibrates. People who have tons of negative energy in their fields will no doubt attract more detrimental energy. That's why it is so important to keep our energy field clear.

What Other Books Have Been Written by Empath Author Yvonne Perry?

In addition to Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You (a guidebook for empathic people who have been unknowingly carrying energetic burdens that belong to someone else) Yvonne Perry (that’s me!) has written nearly a dozen books.

The Sid Series ~ A Collection of Holistic Stories for Children was inspired by my grandson, Sidney, who started demonstrating spiritual gifts at an early age. As a toddler he was clairvoyant (seeing in the spirit realm), but as he matured, he began getting psychic information through dreams. He still hears in the spirit realm. I was concerned that he might also be an empath, and I wanted him, and others kids like him, to avoid the needless suffering I had endured.   The Sid Series is a collection of stories that emerged during the adventures Sidney and I had together, but the stories also deal with topics most adults tend to avoid with children: death, afterlife, ghosts, healing, racial diversity, caring for others, meditation, and spiritual insight. The book is entertaining to children, but it also teaches parents how to open a mature dialogue with them. http://theSidSeries.com

More Than Meets the Eye, True Stories About Death, Dying, and Afterlife (http://deathdyingafterlife.com)  is designed to provide comfort for those who are dying, as well as for the caregivers and family who are left with questions when their loved one passes. When I wrote that book, I had a lot of disembodied spirits coming to me. I didn’t know why ghosts were visiting me, but I felt I was supposed to help them. Writing that book helped me find answers not only to know what the ghosts needed, but for protecting my energy field as an empath. So, the book not only deals with spirit visits after the passing of a loved one, it also covers many aspects of the dying and grieving process and sheds light on euthanasia, suicide, and near-death experience.

How to Connect with an Empathic Child After Distress

by Dr Caron Goode

At age ten, empathic Tess experienced a sudden and abrupt disconnect from her mom, which would affect her for the rest of her life. One day her mom was hugging her after school and teaching her how to cut vegetables. The next day, her Mom did not see her, but looked past her with a distant gaze, spaced-out eyes. Mom told Tess that the voices in her head told her to pull the plugs out of the walls.

Such a rapid disconnection from her mom was worse than losing her mom to death in Tess’ eyes. Rather than being able to say goodbye, Tess had to renegotiate the emotional environment with her mom still alive, yet not present.

Tess was empathic. She felt as her mom felt, and had no way to talk about it or understand it. The result was that Tess withdrew, cried and felt isolated and hurt.

Tess felt threatened by her mom’s withdrawal. She also loved her Mom, so Tess split her attention in half. One half stayed hidden inside a sensitive heart, protecting and armoring. One half re-learned how to live in a home with her mother’s mental illness, diagnosed as Schizoid Affective disorder. Tess was on constant psychic alert.

An intuitive cannot sustain the long-term division of attention in a situation such as Tess experienced without negative emotional consequences. Have you ever walked forward in life while trying to watch your back every two minutes? It would distort your attention and create tension in the same way emotional intensity or trauma strike empathic children. Empathic children will
  • Internalize the toxic feeling that they are the burden
  • Feel inadequate or unloved and turn the messages into negative self-talk.
  • Feel inconsequential, like they have no power or resources in their environment.

These adversarial moments are also brilliant opportunities for developing flexibility and strength rather than being resigned. Help your children develop habits of coping so they become self-confident and trust their intuitive intelligence.

Tess’ therapist had her close her eyes, relax, and go back to age ten when she disconnected from the Mom she knew. Tess felt a giant creature standing beside her left shoulder much like a Wookiee of the Star Wars epics. This imaginary friend became Tess’ protector. She could hide behind him to feel safe, and could control her world in this way. This was a resilience creation, which let Tess control her inner world when she couldn’t control the outer environment.

What are some types of energy an empath can pick up?

Empaths are sensitive to all types of energy: environmental (cell phones, computers, electronic gadgets, satellite transmissions, TV/radio signals, electrical power plants, etc.), emotional, and mental from a stratum of reality known as the "collective unconscious," a term first introduced by Carl Gustav Jung in 1916. This part of the collective psyche includes the seen and unseen spiritual realm of our world. This is why energy-sensitive people hear voices, see apparitions, feel like they are being watched, have physical sensations of being touched when no one is around. Most can sense when another person’s internal barometer changes even when there’s no outward manifestation of this shift.

Empathy is a sixth sense that brings in information and energy (info-energy) like a radio picking up multiple channels all at once. The brain does not know what to do with all this random input. YOu can learn more about empathy and energy management in my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You at http://tinyurl.com/EmpathAmazon.
