Setting Boundaries with People

An empath tends to be somewhat of a caretaker with very thin boundaries. We have such a desire to please and help others, we often do so at the expense of our own health. When an empath is feeling overwhelmed, there is a good chance that she is not caring for her own needs.

A person can get so used to caretaking that they feel they are supposed to do it. I believe it is a violation of another person’s rights to even try to pick up information or sense things about them unless you first ask their permission. It’s like reading their mail or rummaging through their closet! If you are an empath with the typical codependency pattern, your idea of where the line is between you and another person might be a bit blurred. Once you get to know where the line is, it will make all your relationships clearer and cleaner. In my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You, I teach how to sense your own energy and listen to your inner guidance.

Empaths are kind and caring. At times, we are almost saintly because we tend to care for others more than we care for ourselves. However, you are not doing yourself or anyone else any favors by being a martyr. Co-dependency is common in our relationships because we want to please others. Doing or saying something that will make someone else angry or sad is uncomfortable for us, so we often avoid confrontation. After all, if we make someone angry or upset, we will probably pick up that feeling and make us even more uncomfortable. This is not self-care; this is self-sabotage!

Caretaking does not serve or protect another person; it keeps them from growing up and accepting responsibility for their own actions and feelings. You have to be the bad guy from time to time just to maintain your own health and sanity. People may get mad at you if you don't do what they want you to do, but their feelings are not your feelings, and your well-being is not dependent on theirs. Part of maturing as an empath is to stop taking on responsibilities that aren't yours. There are times when we must have the courage to say "no," when called upon to give away our valuable time or emotional resources. It's okay to let others take care of themselves as much as possible. It's fine to ask others to help you! A healthy relationship is a two-way venture where receiving is equal to giving. Let your friends pamper you from time to time.

Extend patient, loving attention to yourself by setting aside time for spiritual renewal, to read, or do a craft or project you enjoy. Find some place where you can be alone in nature to refresh your own batteries. Do some type of physical exercise to keep the energy flowing in your body. Care for yourself the way you do others.

When you treat yourself with compassion, you offer yourself a supportive emotional environment that allows you to overcome past patterns and challenges to step into the positive change that you are seeking and deserve!

The Power of an Empath's Thoughts and Intention

Psychics and empaths have a great deal of energy and if we are not in control of how we use the power of our thoughts and intentions, it can cause harm to self and others. Many empaths and psychics report of equipment malfunction in their presence. After stopping about four watches dead in their tracks within a six-month period in early 2000s, I stopped wearing a watch. If the Universe wants me to know what time it is, there will be a clock within sight. I’m cautious to send only loving thoughts and energy toward my computer and other electronic devises I own.

One empath I chatted with said she seemed to disable cellphones, wireless devices like printers, keyboards, etc. Her boss used to think she was purposely breaking them. Her printer fried twice for no reason. After that, her boss accused her of being into witchcraft and started telling her how important religion was in society. This empath and I have both seen manifestations from what we thought or from some intentional manifesting ritual. This is why empaths and psychics have to sharply watch our thoughts, words, and intent.

I must share this next story as a reminder to be careful of your thoughts, intentions, and words. Because empaths are healers, we not only pick up energy from others, we have a profound ability to send energy. I already knew this, but I was not being attentive to this fact when my husband and I were out to eat last week.

I had asked him twice if he wanted to eat inside or on the patio. For some strange reason, he simply would not answer me. He proceeded on to the drink machine. I admit I have little patience when it comes to being ignored. He turned and asked me what I wanted to drink. I gave him a dirty look and hatefully said, "Unsweetened tea."

"Lemon in it?" He had a perturbed look on his face.

My ego reared its ugly head. "Yes," I snapped and walked out to the patio, my ego soaring with anger.

When he followed me to the patio, he asked, "What's the matter?"

I let lose a verbal eruption expressing my displeasure about his ignoring me. He leaned back in his chair,. closed his eyes, and said nothing. I knew I had gone too far. I apologized immediately, but he continued to sit still. I had let it go so I started eating.

After a few minutes he was still sitting there with his eyes closed. His face was pale and I could tell something was wrong physically. He doesn't normally take things personally or sulk. What's wrong?"

"My head hurts" he said. "Probably too much time in the sun today."

I kept eating but didn't have much of an appetite. "Can we get this to go?" I asked. He still hadn't taken a bite and he was the one who was hungry when we set out for dinner.

"Yeah. My stomach is cramping and I can't eat right now." We packed up our dinner and left.

By the time we got home, I realized what had happened. He was fine until I lashed out at him.  I had sent him detrimental energy by behaving as immaturely I did. So, I hugged him and purposefully sent him loving, healing energy. His entire countenance immediately changed. The headache and the stomach ache stopped. I was shocked that my thoughts and intentions had that much effect upon him. Yikes!

Thoughts are energy, and therefore, very powerful. The more psychic we are, the more responsibility we have to think positive, non-judgmental, non-fearful thoughts. Let’s use our intent to create peace on earth!

Empaths R Us Series

Continuing with our reposting Conduit of Joy’s Empaths R Us Series today, well-known psychiatrist Dr. Judith Orloff gives her input by answering the same questions several other empaths including me (Yvonne Perry) have answered. Dr. Judith Orloff, MD is an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and author of the New York Times and international bestseller, Emotional Freedom. As a board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Orloff blends her traditional medical skills with intuition to enhance patient care. She synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality to achieve physical and emotional healing. She passionately asserts that we have the power to transform negative emotions and achieve inner peace. Dr. Orloff’s site can be accessed here. Read the article here: http://conduitofjoy.com/2011/05/23/empaths-r-us-dr-judith-orloff/

Welcome again to the “Empaths R Us” interview series of empaths.

Today and I am honoured to be posting an interview with Dr. Judith Orloff. (I’m even more honoured as I know she was in the middle of a book tour and had very little time, but she managed to complete this interview).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Empath means “becoming one”. Empaths have the ability to become one with something (humans, animals, crystals, environment, etc.) How would you describe the kind of empath you are?
In Emotional Freedom, I talk about an emotional type called an Emotional Empath. This is someone who is sensitive, loving, intuitive but they are an emotional sponge. They can absorb the stress and negative energy of the world into their own bodies and get exhausted. That’s why I’ve had to practice the strategies in the book in my own life to set clear limits and boundaries with people.
How would you describe your most dominant empath skill?
Sensing what people are feeling emotionally in my own body.
At what age did you consciously become aware that you were more sensitive than others?
As a young child, 7 or 8. I couldn’t go in crowded shopping malls without feeling exhausted or picking up aches or pains I didn’t have before.
How did this empathic ability affect your childhood?
I had no idea what my empathy meant so I was confused and blamed myself for being overly sensitive. My doctor-mother told me “get a thicker skin” which made me feel like I had done something wrong and had to change.
How did your parents or family reaction to your hypersensitivity?
They wanted me to toughen up.
Did your view of your empathy change as you became an adult?
Now I see it as a great gift but I’ve learned how to protect my energy and empathy with the techniques I share in Emotional Freedom. It lets me be passionate, go deep, have compassion with people, experience the nuance of life to the fullest. It also helps me as a psychiatrist have more empathy and compassion with my patients.
At what age did you fully realize what being an empath meant?
In my thirties.
What did you feel like when you realized that there were other empaths in the world?
I felt I was okay and wasn’t so alone or considering myself weird. Now Emotional Freedom gives that sense of being understood to other empaths out there. Empaths need to unite and support one another
How would you say this empathic ability shaped your life overall?
It has made me more sensitive as a psychiatrist, more intuitive, more loving, and able to set clear health limits and boundaries. As an author of Emotional Freedom it has allowed me to help empaths all over the world come into their own power!
Do you consciously use your empathic skills in how you make a living?
Yes, I use it as a psychiatrist with patients every moment and also as a speaker I use it to tune in and empathize with groups.
What are the best techniques that you have found to keep your emotional boundaries intact with others?
Learn that “no is a complete sentence”.
What is your favourite thing about being an empath?
Connecting with the ecsatatic forces of nature.
What is your least favourite thing about being an empath?
Being around chronic talkers. In Emotional Freedom I have a chapter on Emotional Vampires, people who suck your energy dry. All empaths should read that chapter so they know how to handle these people and not be drained.
What is your best piece of advice for other empaths?
You are beautiful!
Develop your sensitivities but practice the strategies in Emotional Freedom to protect your empathy and energy.
Dr. Orloff invites you learn more about helping yourself as an empath, by reading the information in her book “Emotional Freedom.”
Yvonne Perry’s, Whose Stuff is This? should be required reading for every parent and child educator in order to fully understand, teach, and guide the empathic child. How unfortunate it is when a child or adult is labeled “too sensitive” and treated as if he has a disease. Yvonne shares her own personal story along with others that all of us can relate to on one level or another. She gives practical tools and techniques to not only cope but to blossom as an empath. I can’t praise this book enough! ~Denna J. Shelton, Author/Producer, TwentyGems, Journey to the Self
Human and Animal Empath
Today we have another interview on Conduit of Joy in the Empaths R Us series. Nicole Chayka shares her experience as an empath who has been able to connect with what other people feel since childhood. Animals also respond to her energy. This was so natural to her that she didn't recognize herself as having abilities that others didn't have.
What are some types of energy an empath can pick up?
Empaths are sensitive to all types of energy: environmental (cell phones, computers, electronic gadgets, satellite transmissions, TV/radio signals, electrical power plants, etc.), emotional, and mental from a stratum of reality known as the "collective unconscious," a term first introduced by Carl Gustav Jung in 1916. This part of the collective psyche includes the seen and unseen spiritual realm of our world. This is why energy-sensitive people hear voices, see apparitions, feel like they are being watched, have physical sensations of being touched when no one is around. Most can sense when another person’s internal barometer changes even when there’s no outward manifestation of this shift.
Empathy is a sixth sense that brings in information and energy (info-energy) like a radio picking up multiple channels all at once. The brain does not know what to do with all this random input. YOu can learn more about empathy and energy management in my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings,and Energy of Those Around You at http://tinyurl.com/EmpathAmazon. How to Do An Intuitive Body Scan
Do you know what an intuitive body scan is? I use an mp3 guided meditation on my ipod, but in essence, you mentally go over every inch of your body asking questions, feeling what you feel, and sensing divine wisdom for instruction about what is the best mode of treatment for whatever you find.
This is how I became convinced that even though my dentist didn't find any dental abnormality in my first visit, my tooth was the culprit of the four-month long suffering I endured with pain in my face, neck, ear, head, and sinuses. I completed a round of antibiotics he gave me and still the pain continued. My medical doctor ordered a CT scan. It showed what she thought might be a sinus infection, so I went on another round of antibiotics. These were so strong that they tore up my digestive system. It took six weeks of probiotics to regain integrity in my intestines. I was scheduled to see the neurologist next. I kept thinking it was the tooth all along, so I decided to listen to my own body's wisdom through a body scan.
During the body scan, I clearly heard the word "mercury" and it dawned upon me that I needed to get that tooth removed—not filled, not a root canal, not a crown, but removed. I got up from my body scan and immediately called for another dentist appointment.
If you don't have a guided meditation of a body scan, you can purchase one such as Body Scan by Vidyamala & Sona , or do your own by using your attention to focus on each part of the body individually.
Ask your higher self, angels, guides, ascended masters, or whoever you like to work with for healing to attend your effort. Start at the top of your head and pay attention to what you feel, hear, sense (intuit),  see about it. Ask for instruction about what this part of the body  needs in order to be in perfect health. Then, go down the back of your  head, then your face, all the way around your neck, then shoulders.  Continue the practice of listening, sensing, seeing, etc. as you move  your attention down your arms one at the time, then your hands. Go back to your shoulders and start the focus on your chest, circling  around to your back and continuing this spiral around your torso as  you move down to your groin. The legs and feet are last and when complete, continue to listen for an overall message from Spirit.
Tips for Empaths Who Bring Clients/People into Their Personal Space
I know someone who worked from home and had clients in her house for sessions. Her clients were nice people but they all were always nervous, worked up, and self-conscious. When she would attempt to make them feel more comfortable, she ended up feeling unpleasant as she swapped energy with them. Because she couldn't stop feeling everyone’s energy left behind after each visit, she stopped working from home.
If you are an empath who brings clients into your personal space, there are some things you can do to keep clear.
1. Set energetic boundaries around your property/studio by raising the vibration in your setting.
2. Use sage or incense to smudge your house before and after each client
3. Add flowers or potted plants to your decor
4. Have soft, chakra-balancing music playing in the background
5. Use essential oils in aromatherapy to raise the vibration of your space
6. Ground and center your energy and clear your energy field before and after each session
7. Ask angels to bring an orb of golden sunslight to encompass your property
8. Raise your personal vibration by singing, dancing, and other uplifting things before the client arrives.
9. Set your intention not to pick up anything unlike love
10. Use feng shui to set up your home studio in a manner that allows energy to flow more freely
Is the Rapture Going to Happen Tomorrow?
I heard the rumor about tomorrow being the day prophesied by Christians to be the rapture when those who adhere to a certain dogma will be snatched from the earth and the rest of us left to face the aftermath. Naturally, when this many people believe something, it has an effect upon the mass consciousness of humanity. Therefore, a lot of empaths are sensing fear, unrest, and sorrow. Some are reporting an ominous feeling that something horrible on a planetary scale is about to occur, so I want to address this.
Those whose empathic and psychic abilities are keen, are picking up on the collective fear that is being generated by the millions of fundamentalists who believe that tomorrow is the day that Jesus Christ will return to collect His people. Thus, according to this legend, a vast number of humans will be suddenly exited from the earth in mass numbers by something similar to an abduction by aliens. A lot of folks are panicking about this possibility, but why? Okay, so it could happen, I guess. But, people have cried wolf, saying for a thousand or more years that the rapture is coming.  Many have prophesied rapture dates that have come and gone without event.
My personal guess is that nothing catastrophic is going to happen: no rapture, no polar shift, no meteor hitting the earth, etc. However, I'm not discounting that a huge catastrophic event such as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and other horrific natural events could occur. We have seen many signs that the earth is rocking and reeling as it nears the center of the Milky Way Galaxy as discussed by Gregg Braden in his book, Fractal Time. But no matter what happens, we have nothing to fear. We are spirit beings having an earth experience. We will continue to exist in peace, love, and light in the afterlife no matter when or how we exit the earth plane.
If you read yesterday's post "Unlimited God," you realize that we cannot be separated from our creator. We are of the Light and will eventually return to the Light--whether tomorrow or a hundred years from now. So, no panic is necessary. Quite the opposite: holding peace and love in our hearts and mind and sending that out to the collective consciousness may very well have a calming impact to help avoid planetary upset on a wide scale.  The earth is a conscious living, entity that is effected by the emotions of her inhabitants. Send her the energy of the Love that you are! Be the peace that you desire. Forgive all offenses and see everyone as part of you and God/Goddess.
Unlimited God
Why is focusing on the light within you so powerful for removing negative thoughts? Because the light is what some call God--the infinite, omniscient, omnipresent energy that is in everything--living being, inanimate objects, and conscious thought, which is the power to create. The more you approach the center of God’s thought system, the clearer and stronger the light becomes. It expands right thinking and shows darkness to be the imaginings of the ego. The more one lives in ego-based thought, the darker and more obscure the path of joy becomes. As a result more suffering will be encountered. As the light becomes clearer, you automatically understand what you need to do to change your situation.
No one can be beyond the limitless God. Therefore there are no saved/unsaved, believers/unbelievers, because God or Christ consciousness is everywhere in this or any other universe. Otherwise, He would be limited. Can you exclude yourself from the Universe or God? Then, how can one be “lost” as some religions teach? We are lost when we see ourselves separate from God/infinite source/universe or whatever you choose to call this conscious life force. Do you really believe that part of God can be missing or damned to hell? Hell is what we create in our thoughts; it is individualized for each of us as we live in our own world that we have created with our beliefs, attitudes, thoughts, and actions. Heaven can also be created by choosing to see yourself as one with God and others. We are one in spirit.
The Health Benefits of Tears
Adapted from Dr. Judith Orloff’s new book “Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life” (Harmony Books, 2009)
For over twenty years as physician, I’ve witnessed, time and again, the healing power of tears. Tears are your body’s release valve for stress, sadness, grief, anxiety, and frustration. Also, you can have tears of joy, say when a child is born or tears of relief when a difficulty has passed. In my own life, I am grateful when I can cry. It feels cleansing, a way to purge pent up emotions so they don’t lodge in my body as stress symptoms such as fatigue or pain. To stay healthy and release stress, I encourage my patients to cry. For both men and women, tears are a sign of courage, strength, and authenticity.
In “Emotional Freedom,” I discuss the numerous health benefits of tears. Like the ocean, tears are salt water. Protectively they lubricate your eyes, remove irritants, reduce stress hormones, and they contain antibodies that fight pathogenic microbes. Our bodies produce three kinds of tears: reflex, continuous, and emotional. Each kind has different healing roles. For instance, reflex tears allow your eyes to clear out noxious particles when they’re irritated by smoke or exhaust. The second kind, continuous tears, are produced regularly to keep our eyes lubricated--these contain a chemical called “lysozyme” which functions as an anti-bacterial and protects our eyes from infection. Tears also travel to the nose through the tear duct to keep the nose moist and bacteria free. Typically, after crying, our breathing, and heart rate decrease, and we enter into a calmer biological and emotional state.
Emotional tears have special health benefits. Biochemist and “tear expert” Dr. William Frey at the Ramsey Medical Center in Minneapolis discovered that reflex tears are 98% water, whereas emotional tears also contain stress hormones which get excreted from the body through crying. After studying the composition of tears, Dr. Frey found that emotional tears shed these hormones and other toxins which accumulate during stress. Additional studies also suggest that crying stimulates the production of endorphins, our body’s natural pain killer and “feel-good” hormones.” Interestingly, humans are the only creatures known to shed emotional tears, though it’s possible that that elephants and gorillas do too. Other mammals and also salt-water crocodiles produce reflex tears which are protective and lubricating.
Crying makes us feel better, even when a problem persists. In addition to physical detoxification, emotional tears heal the heart. You don’t want to hold tears back. Patients sometimes say, “Please excuse me for crying. I was trying hard not to. It makes me feel weak.” My heart goes out to them when I hear this. I know where that sentiment comes from: parents who were uncomfortable around tears, a society that tells us we’re weak for crying--in particular that “powerful men don’t cry.” I reject these notions. The new enlightened paradigm of what constitutes a powerful man and woman is someone who has the strength and self awareness to cry. These are the people who impress me, not those who put up some macho front of faux-bravado.
Try to let go of outmoded, untrue, conceptions about crying. It is good to cry. It is healthy to cry. This helps to emotionally clear sadness and stress. Crying is also essential to resolve grief, when waves of tears periodically come over us after we experience a loss. Tears help us process the loss so we can keep living with open hearts. Otherwise, we are a set up for depression if we suppress these potent feelings. When a friend apologized for curling up in the fetal position on my floor, weeping, depressed over a failing romance, I told her, “Your tears blessed my floor. There is nothing to apologize for.”
I’ve been this enthusiastic about crying for years. In fact, during my psychiatric residency at UCLA when supervisors and I watched videos of me with patients, they’d point out that I’d smile when a patient cried. “That’s inappropriate,” they’d say. I disagreed then; still do. I wasn’t smiling because my patients were depressed or grieving. I was smiling because they were courageously healing depression or other difficult emotions with tears. I was happy for their breakthrough. In my life, too, I love to cry. I cry whenever I can. Wish I could more. Thank God our bodies have this capacity. I hope you too can appreciate the experience. Let your tears flow to purify stress and negativity.
Judith Orloff MD, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and intuition expert, is author of the New York Times Bestseller Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life (Three Rivers Press, 2011) Her other bestsellers are Positive Energy, Intuitive Healing, and Second Sight. Dr. Orloff synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition and energy medicine. How did you discover you are an empath?
When you first discover that you are an empath, it can be pretty eye opening. You finally begin to understand why you feel and think the way you do. There's comfort in the company of those who understand what you go through when you feel overwhelmed.
From the time I was young, I was very sensitive to how others felt. I tried to console or “fix” my parents when they argued and it always upset me for anyone to display negativity. I cried a lot—especially when I prayed for others. I called myself an intercessor or prayer warrior as I carried burdens of others to the “throne of grace” on behalf of others. Unfortunately, I didn’t know how to leave those burdens there, and continued to carry them with me in the form of worry, anxiety, sickness, depression, underlying stress, and nervousness. I heard voices and could sense subtle energy shifts in a room. I could tell when a disembodied spirit was around me, which was much of the time. I thought I was going crazy and so did some of my family members. There were no answers to be found for my incessant sorrow. Soon, depression began urging me to give up the desire to live.
I remember someone asking me if I was a “surrogate.” My body immediately lurched forward and involuntarily let out a loud, wailing groan and I started crying. That response surprised me, but I realized my intuition or inner guidance was trying to give me a message. I started searching for answers and learned that “empath” is the term for someone who carries the energetic burdens of others. There are a lot of us out there and not all are called intercessors. They wear labels such as nurses, counselors, teachers, energy workers, soldiers, hospice providers, nannies, police, healers, emergency responders, retail clerks, victim advocates, and psychics, to name a few. Although they love people and enjoy what they do, many of them feel depleted, overwhelmed, nervous, depressed, or angry much of the time.
So, how did you find out you were an empath? Leave a comment below this post and let me know how I can reach you. I would like to hear your story and I'll contact you about publishing it here.
Empaths Shifting into 2012: A Telesummit to Help Energy-sensitive People Understand Their Spiritual Role on Earth
We are a generation that walks between two worlds—that of physical reality and spiritual realms. Millions of people have lost many things: loved ones, jobs, investments, property, savings, etc. Many empaths have been cocooning and processing grief, trying to determine what they wish to bring forward and what is the next step.
A great number of folks are leaving the planet through the change known as death. People are having to heal generational patterns that no longer serve the greatest good. This is hard work physically and energetically.
The shift is occurring so rapidly (as it must) that empathic people may feel nearly insane, as if we can't catch our breath or stay grounded. The spiritual knowledge of the ancients is being uncovered and rediscovered, and everyone's inner healer seems to be waking up. We have the ability to shift all of this for good, but we must learn to love that which most disturbs us and learn to live far more intuitively and collaboratively.
I am putting together a teleseminar about empathy, but first I want to know how much interest there is in this type of workshop.
1. This teleseminar would be free except for the cost of a long-distance call. A teleseminar is conducted via telephone. Everyone calls the number they are given and enters a pass code to join the conference.
2. There will be a panel of about eight experts who will speak about how the earth is shifting to bring in more divine feminine energy and how this affects lightworkers and empaths. You will be able to ask questions in advance or during each of the four one-hour calls spread over a four-week period.
Would you like to participate in this free telesummit? If you have any interest, I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
You Must Care for Yourself in Order to Care for Others
If you focus on serving other people more than yourself, you may be feeling depleted. While you are supposed to be focused on being selfless and serving others, it cannot be at the expense of your own health. There are two primary causes of feeling depleted as a result of serving others. One is that individuals are not caring for themselves; the other is because of serving with impure motives. Every empath needs to know how to serve others selflessly while taking their own needs into consideration. Here is an article that will help. http://dld.bz/Zprz
VIDEO: Jenna, What is Energy Healing?
The one thing we empaths don’t like to do is admit when we are feeling overwhelmed. We may be under the impression that because we write books and offer material to help others manage their energy, we should not have a difficult time managing our energy. But no matter how much we put into practice what we preach, there are times when we need the help of our fellow humans! To think otherwise would be pretentious, at best.
I made an audio about this very thing after being inspired by the video my empath friend Jenna posted on YouTube. See how we encourage and uplift one another? We really are one in spirit!
Clearing Your Energy Field
Some highly-sensitive people silently show empathy and compassion by soaking up other peoples' negative energy. We naturally want to restore balance and heal people wherever we go, but the trouble is we don’t realize that taking negative energy from other folks will eventually make us unhealthy.
Energy from others first engages with the energetic layers or subtle bodies that create the interconnected electromagnetic field of energy (auric field) around our physical body. Information in this auric field is received by the chakras and sent to the brain for processing and sending messages to the areas of the body that correlate with that type of information. Therefore, clearing your energy field is the place to begin working when you decide you’ve had enough of taking on everyone else’s stuff.
There are many easy and effective ways to control and eliminate detrimental energy and entities that may have entered your field during your workday. I’ll give one here as an example:
Imagine a wide cylinder of white light extending from the higher realms above you, encasing your body and aura. The light is going through you, and passing into the very center of the earth where it locks in place. You are surrounded by this light and nothing negative can penetrate it. Because this light is above you, in you, around you, and below you, it is grounding you to the earth’s energy, clearing your aura, and raising your vibration by connecting with higher realms.
Imagine that you are growing roots from the bottom of your feet that reach deep in the earth. These roots are flexible, so when you lift your feet, the roots follow you.
See a cord of light (you choose the color) coming from your root chakra and extending deep into the earth.
Clearing is an ongoing process and must be done regularly to stay free of other people's energy. When you first put defense mechanisms in place, you may still get overwhelmed in a crowd or when there is emotional turmoil around you, but the discomfort will lessen as you continue to develop your intuition and put effort into your spiritual practice.
In my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom From the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You (ISBN: 9780982572245), there’s an entire chapter of exercises you can do at home. These are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference. Depending upon how much stuff you have in your field and how long it has been there and how fast you want to get rid of it, you may want to consider receiving some type of energy work from an energy worker or natural health practitioner My book has a list of resources for practitioners.
Stories from Empathic People
Emotions such as fear, anger, and frustration are energies. Like a virus, you can potentially “catch” them from people without realizing it. Empathic people can be psychic sponges that absorb energy everywhere they go. In my twenties and thirties, I was so energy sensitive that if I heard an ambulance siren, I would feel instant panic. If I came upon an accident scene or a homeless person, I cried. If I saw an open wound, I would feel something like an electric shock all over my body. In traffic, I felt the anger and frustration of my fellow drivers so keenly that my throat would close up and I could not swallow. When I was in my prayer closet, I would cry, groan, shake, and travail on behalf of others. These and similar scenarios were so common for me that I thought everyone felt this way. I had no idea that I was an empath. I had never heard of such a thing.
But I quickly learned that I am not alone in my empathic abilities, which can be both a gift and a curse. In chapter 2 of my new book, Whose Stuff Is This?, I share stories from the empaths I interviewed as part of my research. There is a wide variety of situations in which folks have found themselves as a result of this intuitive gift. Some of these people have just realized they are empaths; others are veteran empaths who are using this intuitive gift as part of their healing practice.
One person I interviewed said that it has both saved his life and broken his heart. “I thought I was an agoraphobic for the longest because when I was around a lot of people I felt overwhelmed,” said Jonathan. “I thought it was anxiety, but then I began to be able to tell when someone was lying to me. It can hurt to know someone you love is lying to your face.”
One person I heard from said she if she drove past a serious car accident, she would feel all the emotions of the people involved, including the confusion of the person who had just died at the scene. If there was someone in the car with her, she felt embarrassed about crying and having to explain why she was crying.
Samantha says being an empath is generally draining. “You may feel dread or have to prepare yourself to be around people. It makes it impossible to get down to what you truly feel instead of what others are projecting to you,” says Samantha. “There are a few people who are very good at disguise. Their energy may feel positive at first, but they can’t keep up the wall very long.”
Julie Isaac says she has always known that she picked up people's emotional energy, but she didn't know she was picking up their aches and pains, as well.
“For years I thought I was a hypochondriac until one Thursday night when I knew with every fiber of my being that I was going to have a heart attack. Going to have! There was no pain, so there was no reason to go to the hospital to tell them that I would soon be having a heart attack. I decided to watch TV and relax until I felt something that would tell me it's time to go to the hospital. Then, in an instant, the feeling/knowing lifted. It was so bizarre. The next day, Friday, I went to work and my boss was out sick. On Monday, they told us that she had had a heart attack on Thursday night. That's when I realized I wasn't a hypochondriac; I was picking up on other people's physical energy.”
Fortunately, the gift of empathy can be developed and used to help others without causing harm to yourself. Hillary Raimo is the founder and author of the signature UNtraining™ series. As an empath she feels energy and can tune in to the emotional energy of another person, animal, or event in order to read it. She says the gift can often be dismissed by others or mistaken for psychological issues. Hillary pursued psychology in college so she could better understand herself, but when she began to explore shamanistic and psychic studies, it clicked that she had been empathic all her life. She now uses this gift in her work as an intuitive healer.
Since so many empaths are natural healers, I decided to touch briefly on this topic in Chapter 11 of my book in case some readers want to go a step farther and seek training as a natural healer or psychic practitioner.
Why there are benefits to aligning and attracting positive energy
Yvonne Perry's intelligent book expresses the challenges that come along with the gifts of being an empath or sensitive. Her expressive stories are a natural way to relate and communicate the effect that being sensitive has on us. Her approach is by far a very easy way to understand not only how we can deal with others but a way to connect to them. It is a much-needed book that explains why there are benefits to aligning and attracting positive energy and why detaching from negative personalities is so vital to our holistic health and well-being. After all, we want to know the answer to “Whose Stuff Is This?” so that we can apply the necessary solutions.
Understanding Empathy
Empathy is the ability to feel what another person, animal, or spirit is feeling—to put yourself in their shoes so to speak—and sympathize with their pain, suffering, depression, illness, etc. That is a good quality for humans to have; however, some people tend to become overloaded with the energy of others to the point of compromising their own well-being. They unknowingly pick up energy from the collective unconscious and electronic devices in their physical environment. Some can even sense the emotions and illnesses of friends, family members, and strangers in another city, state, or country. These energy-sensitive people are the empaths to whom my book, Whose Stuff Is This?, is geared.
Empathy is one part of our divine guidance system commonly called “intuition.” As spirit or energy beings, we are all empathic to some degree, but some people have the ability to feel energy more easily and intensely than the average person. At times, this can disrupt their lives because they become emotionally distraught or physically ill as a result of carrying someone else’s energy along with their own stuff. This condition is compounded when an empath does not recognize how his or her own energy feels or is disconnected from his or her own body, thoughts, and feelings.
Being empathic allows us to pick up information with the five commonly accepted senses: sight, hearing, smell, feeling/touch, and taste to bring us a message about others. It allows us to bring in information and energy (info-energy) like a radio picking up multiple channels all at once. The brain of a hypersensitive person does not know what to do with all this random input. These empaths must learn to interpret the information they receive and shield themselves from being a dumping ground for psychic energy.
Since these energetic impulses and messages come from a variety of sources, it may be difficult for empaths to discern whose energy they are picking up on. This can cause depression, anxiety attacks, physical symptoms, or a burst of emotions that seem to appear for no reason. Most empaths have no idea how to manage this energy or turn it off. Some don't even know they are an empath, much less what to do about it. You may be one of them.
Thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are a subtle form of energy. Through quantum physics, it has been scientifically proven that everything—when viewed at an atomic or subatomic level—is energy manifested in different forms, states, and frequencies. We are submersed in a matrix or field of intelligent energy. Max Planck first proposed the quantum theory of an energy matrix in 1944. Today, scientists agree that everything—even what we once thought to be empty space—is actually comprised of particles and waves of energy. Not only are we affected by this ever-changing field of energy, our DNA, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can rearrange the field as we interact with one another.
Knowing this, I wonder if it is possible to not be affected by other people’s energy. It only seems natural. We are all born with the ability to tap into another person’s energy field to receive impulses, perceive intention, or project our thoughts and influence on others. Even though you may not recognize this ability as a psychic skill, you’ve probably “felt” someone else’s energy. For example, have you ever been sitting in a public place—perhaps reading a book and minding your own business—and sensed that someone was projecting energy toward you? When you looked up, you caught someone staring at you from across the room.
Being empathic is not a burden you must bear anymore. You can learn to shut out unwanted energy and keep others from violating your personal boundaries. First, you have to set boundaries. I show you how to do that in my book. You can also learn to direct your own energy and keep it from “leaking” or roaming by default. Then you will be able to send healing vibes when you choose rather than when someone wants to siphon your energy. You may find that you have undeveloped psychic gifts that you want to hone. It is possible to tap into another person’s field when invited to read the emotional information and help them know what is going on energetically for them.
For more help dealing with energy overload and setting boundaries, see Chapters 10 and 11 of my book.
VIDEO: I AM is a movie about how we are all connected
Producer Tom Shadyac wanted to talk about "the root cause of the ills of the world, because if there is a common cause, and we can talk about it, air it out in a public forum, then we have a chance to solve it.” The result is this movie, I AM.
Michael David Lawrience Interviews Yvonne Perry a Nashville author who Shares Methods to Help Highly-sensitive People Shield Themselves from Detrimental Energy
This interview first appeared on Michael Lawrience's blog. I'm sharing it here today.
Would you like to find relief from your emotional storms and empathic fatigue?
Today, I am happy to interview my friend, Yvonne, a highly-sensitive empath whose book, WHOSE STUFF IS THIS? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You shows ways to stay emotionally healthy in a over-stimulating world.
Would you like to learn how to create healthy boundaries, stay balanced, and release other people's energy and emotions which drain your energy creating fatigue? Check it out to find out more at http://whosestuffisthis.blogspot.com/
Michael: Yvonne when do we know that we are being or have been energetically drained by someone?
Yvonne: Empaths are so energy sensitive we can usually feel when something shifts or isn’t quite right. However, it may not occur to us that we are being affected by the energy of another person until we are in the middle of a negative situation or mood change. It may be a feeling of anger, a sudden onset of sadness or depression when our circumstances don’t indicate a reason for such, or feeling chronically fatigued—especially after being around a particular person or place.
Michael: Who can benefit from your book?
Yvonne: Every sensitive person, regardless of how they come to interact with negative energy, could benefit from this book and learning how to detach and screen out the emotions and pain of others while remaining compassionate and effective as a healer or friend, mother, or coworker says Denise Demaras, an artist and holistic spiritual health counselor, who endorses the book. So many people don't understand how or even notice the effect that others have on their moods or health. Suddenly they are mean and cranky, sad or sick, every time they are in the company of a certain person
Michael: What are some techniques to help empathic people or anyone create stay energized and when necessary release other people's energy and emotions which created additional stress and fatigue.
Yvonne: The top three for me are keeping my auric field clear and close to my body, asking for divine assistance in protecting the boundaries of my energy field, and staying grounded and centered. Chapter 9 of my book gives several ways to do this. It’s not a one-time thing, but rather an ongoing practice for the energy-sensitive person.
