What is the Difference Between Empathy and Intuition?

Intuition is the collective body of our internal guidance system, which goes far beyond common sense and includes telepathy, pre-cognizance, clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, or having a "knowing" sense.

Empathy is part of this sixth sense guidance system. Being empathic allows us to pick up information with the five commonly accepted senses: sight, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling to bring a message about others or help them ease their burdens by carrying the emotion or pain for them. Some people would love to learn how to be more empathic, but it is much wiser to get information about people through intuition or by communicating directly with their over soul.

Empathy brings in information and energy (info-energy) like a radio picking up multiple channels all at once. The brain does not know what to do with all this random input. Developing our intuition requires us to tune in and interpret the information we are receiving.

Intuition does not invade the field of another person in order to glean information. It is not external but rather internal. There are times when you will hear your intuition telling you to avoid a situation or person. It might tell you to take a different route to work and later you find that an accident took place on your normal route about the time you would have arrive at that location. This type of insight comes from the universal mind where all knowledge is stored. It is direct, impartial, unemotional, and does not discriminate or judge. It does not impose on you or others. It sees the bigger picture and offers suggestions and information accordingly, but you have to decide what to do with it. Intuition does not shout. If you are stressed out, frustrated, upset, or angry you may miss an important message that could actually ease your burden. Unfortunately, most people are so busy, they don’t take time to listen to the gentle and wise voice within.

Intuition is your own mind, higher self, or over soul speaking to you from a higher perspective—like a bird’s-eye view—and assisting you in making good decisions and avoiding trouble. People who actively use their intuition make rapid and quite accurate assessments of people, surroundings, and situations.

Children instinctively use their intuition to gather information about certain things. Instead of teaching them to question them, teach them to trust what they're feeling, and help them learn the value of listening to their inner voice. our intuition is a great gift; it is the wisdom within that helps us make good decisions, find the safest way, know who to trust, and make life easier.

Some people, children and teens included, are so intuitive and empathic that they have trouble dealing with the overload of energy they pick up from their environment and from those around them. This can lead to stress and even illness if not dealt with. In my new book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You, I show you how to recognize your own energy and let the rest go. There’s also a chapter about how children develop intuition and empathy.

Everyone is Connected to Source and Has Intuitive Abilities

I was stuck in the public library uploading videos one day, so I used the time to read Yvonne and Caron's book, Whose Stuff Is This?. I love being reminded of who we are: consciousness explorers, but I'd have to say that probably few of us enjoyed the journey as empaths until we started making sense of it and began self-mastery.

I have not had the intense experiences Yvonne has had, but I've certainly had depression or anxiety. I used to wonder what the heck was the matter with me. Lots of people thought I was nuts!

Not too long ago, I met with a prospective client and truly couldn't get away from him fast enough. He felt so yucky to me. I don't know how I process this kind of psychic information; I just got out of his presence. My journey has been in giving myself permission to feel good and not sacrifice myself on the altar of others. If the energy of someone or someplace doesn't feel good, I get away. I know they are connected to Source just as I am, so I move on with no guilt.

In reading Yvonne’s account and so many anecdotes of others, I feel a great sense of relief and gratitude for who I am, and for having followed my guidance to read this book. Looking at the journey Yvonne has been on and where she is now . . . wow! Well done indeed. And how wonderful to have Caron's training/language/mental framework to be able to describe this process to others. Great team work that will benefit and enlighten many and move mankind upward in our consciousness evolution.

This book will be helpful to all those light workers who think they've gone over the edge. It will encourage them to keep letting go of limiting, painful, negative beliefs and feel good. I hope that mental health care professionals will read this book and begin to entertain the notion that that mental illness is not illness; but focus and frequencies. I've often said we are all like Neanderthal’s with this energy concept, but at last we're finding our way through it. In fact, I think the term “spirituality” is going to go away as we come to realize that we all have intuitive abilities and they are not limited to the holy and or the mystical person.

It's a I appreciate these two women for answering the call to write this brave, practical, and useful book.

Virtual Book Tour Week Three

Hello, WITS Community!

Week three of my virtual blog tour is now history. I visited five more blogs and presented all new material that I believe you writers and creative types will appreciate. Here are the links to the blogs in case you want to catch up on your reading and listening.

Monday, March 14 - An empath is a "feeler," and we usually know when we've reached our limit. If the emotional burden of another person or situation becomes too great, we can pull away without being hateful, angry, or upset. It is an essential act of self preservation that must be utilized. Soulmate Coach Crystal shared more in an article that gives examples on how empaths can detach politely before becoming overwhelmed by a situation or person's energy. http://www.soulmatecoachcrystal.blogspot.com/

Tuesday, March 15 - What inspired you to write this book? When did you first consider yourself a writer? Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?" These are some of the questions Lisa Jackson asked me to answer in our interview. Go to http://lisahaseltonsreviewsandinterviews.blogspot.com and find out what my most interesting writing quirk is!

Wednesday, March 16 - Emotions such as fear, anger, and frustration are energies. Like a virus, energy-sensitive people can potentially "catch" them from people without realizing it. Empathic people can be psychic sponges that absorb energy everywhere they go. Pat Bertram shared an article, " Stories from an Empath," on Dragon My Feet: http://dragonmyfeet.wordpress.com

Thursday, March 17 - Babies absorb the mental and emotional energy of the people around them. They don't filter anything; they simply receive. As a child ages, this empathic tendency may increase and get out of control. Some children pick up the emotions, energy, or thoughts of others to the degree that it becomes overwhelming and interrupts the development of their social and emotional life. Read the article Elizabeth Bennett posted: "Empathy in Children and Teens" on http://peerabuse.blogspot.com

"I truly love this book by Yvonne Perry and wish someone had written it years ago when I was in my mid-20s and early 30s when I found myself taking on the burdens of so many of those around me," says Barbara Techel. "This book has reaffirmed that there is nothing wrong with me. Chapter 9 is my favorite because it is filled with wonderful advice to help empaths protect their energy. I'm so thankful to Yvonne for writing this book! Barbara shared a YouTube video about how having too much empathy can drain an energy-sensitive person. http://www.joyfulpaws.com

Friday, March 18 - Are you sensitive to the events that are occurring in the world today? Do graphic and violent movies or TV shows impact you negatively? Do you become exhausted simply dealing with the events affecting individuals around you, whether you know them or not?  You may be an empath! Find out in Barbara Joye's interview on Creative Cafe Radio Show: www.blogtalkradio.com/shiftguru. In this show, The Angelic Realm addresses the challenges of being an empath in this time in history.

Detaching Politely Before You Reach Your Limit

An empath's best coping method is the ability to detach from others or a situation. An empath is a feeler, and we usually know when we’ve reached our limit. If the emotional burden of another person or situation becomes too great, we can pull away without being hateful, angry, or upset. It is an essential act of self preservation that must be utilized.

From time to time, I still find that being in a crowd for a long period of time is overwhelming for me, even though I have done everything I recommend in my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You. Advanced preparation and being proactive is the key to avoiding overstimulation. When planning meetings and public engagements, seek venues that are quiet and peaceful. It doesn’t have to be the library or a morgue, but those are options!

Recently, I found a great coffee shop on the east side of Nashville. They serve the best coffee in town, or at least that’s my opinion. So, I thought it was a good idea to meet a colleague there and pick up another bag of the delicious brew for home use. Things started out great about 10:30 a.m., but after about an hour, the room was filling with lunch customers and the conversation volume and emotional energy level was increasing. Within thirty minutes, I had grounded and centered several times, but I had gone past my personal limit. I could hardly hear myself think, much less carry on a conversation with my friend. I wanted to run out the door and get away, but that didn’t seem the professional thing to do. I needed to politely detach.

I said, “Bob, this place has gotten so loud, I can hardly hear what you are saying.” I had to practically scream to be heard. “Can we move to that table in the back of the room?”

He was all too glad to, but moving didn’t help me very much. By then, I was in overload and for the next fifteen minutes, my attention was not on my conversation with my friend. I was trying to tune out the psychic “tips and quips” I was getting about the people at the table next to us. It was past time for me to leave.
“Bob, I am very interested in what you have to say, but if you don’t mind, I’d like to continue our conversation at another time and a different location. I am over stimulated by the energy in this room.” I picked up my purse and stood. “I will email you when I get home and check my calendar. We can set something up for next week.”

He was very understanding.

The next time I met a colleague, I asked him to meet me at a bookstore where there is a coffee shop. This was a much better setting and I was able to work with that colleague for three hours before my hungry stomach started growling for dinner. I wasn’t even over stimulated when I got home.

Empaths need to have the foresight to plan ahead, and most of the time that is doable if you are the one planning the meeting. But, what if you are not the planner, but rather the guest? For social gatherings, such as a party, where there will be a lot of unfamiliar energy, I either stay near someone I know or engage in conversation with someone whose energy feels good—I generally gravitate toward children! If I start to feel overwhelmed, I’ll find a corner where I can observe the action without being antisocial or placing myself right in the middle of things. That position allows me to take breaks without being missed while I go outside or to a quiet room to get away from the cacophony of energy. If my husband goes with me to a social event and I start feeling over stimulated, I can stand near him or hold his hand for a moment to help ground myself with his energy. If I do this several times, he knows I am ready to leave and will look for a way to politely say our goodbyes. If I am going to a function without my husband, I may drive my own car so I’m not stranded if I need to leave.

For more help dealing with energy overload and setting boundaries, see Chapter 10 of my book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You.

Spiritual Connection Between Us: Empathy Tour Day 20

Tuesday, March 22 - Anne Lyken-Garner (@esther96 on Twitter) shares a media release about empathy on http://www.abloggersbooks.com

No one feels the power of our spiritual connection more than energy-sensitive people known as empaths, who unknowingly pick up on the detrimental thoughts, feelings, and even the illnesses of others and their environment. Many empaths carry the negativity of others as if it were their own. Some are so burdened with the energy of others, they are no longer aware of what their own energy feels like.

Mysterious illnesses, anxiety attacks, hearing voices, seeing shadows, feeling negative, fearful, anger, or having an impending sense of dread are indications of an empathic person accessing other realms.

Around your physical body, there is a magnetic shield of energy known as your aura. Your aura gathers energy and information as you interface with your environment. Ideally, your energy field should be kept two to three feet from your body, but many untrained empaths unknowingly allow their aura to extend and blend with the energy fields of others who have lax auric boundaries.

Praying for Japan without Becoming Overly Distraught Emotionally

Much as been said or written about the year 2012, and some of the visible changes on the Earth such as the earthquakes and resulting tsunamis in Japan (and other parts of the world over the past few years) are a response to the astronomical changes being created as the Earth crosses the equator of the Milky Way. The change in magnetism as our planet moves across the equator of our galaxy has caused tectonic plates of Earth to move or shift. Scientist Gregg Braden  mentioned in his best-selling book, Fractal Time, that 2012 is the end of a  5,125-year cycle of time. The Mayans and other cultures predicted this event, which has happened before and will happen again as Earth continues to move through space.

But, what about the intuitive and empathic people who are having a difficult time with empathic or surrogate suffering? Feeling the emotions of others during a world catastrophe can indeed be taxing. There have been times when I've been so impacted by the emotional energy of others that you would have thought I was the one who was directly affected. I would grieve so deeply on behalf of someone that I would actually become sick. While this proves our connection to one another, this behavior is definitely not healthy and it doesn't help those who are indeed suffering.

Getting our emotional energy entangled with the sorrow of others tends to cloud our judgment and ability to hear from Spirit and know HOW to help. Our prayers are important and effective, but we need to be clear-headed and spiritually guided  in order to know what practical steps we might take to help. There are things we can do to help without becoming overly emotional.

I began by asking, "What would Spirit have us pray for the people in Japan?"

It is always safe to send love and light. Love naturally has a healing and protective quality. Light gives insight and wisdom where it is needed. Sending love and light is a way of activating Divine intelligence so that those in charge of rescue, repair, restoring power, and keeping the nuclear plants intact will know what to do to.Holding space for those who have been detrimentally affected is a way of helping stabilize their emotional field as well as our own and that of Mother Earth. Read a beautiful prayer from a friend I met on Twitter named @LuRainPenny.

It never hurts to ask angels and archangels to assist with calming Mother Earth. Many ancient cultures had "weather warriors" or shamans who could speak peace to storms (Jesus did this! Mark 4: 39 ) or conjure up rain in times of drought (Elijah 1 Kings 18). We can pray for or command peace on our planet.

Resources: Audio to Help Empaths Set Boundaries and Say No

YOU, my empathic friends, are the guest of honor on my podcast and blog today! This audio is a message delivered  in the form of a meditative affirmation to help empathic people set boundaries and find encouragement to take time in self care.

Most people do not realize how connected we are, let alone how much this connection affects us. We feel compelled to help others even when we need to rest or care for ourselves. We have assigned nobility to the martyr who keeps pushing when they are drained. There's no prize for allowing yourself to be slowly tortured in the name of doing good deeds in your own strength. You must learn to give from the flow of abundant energy of love and light that comes from a higher source. Listen and learn how!

Today (Tuesday, March 15) is the big launch day of the new English translation of the bestselling book Emotional Balance: the path to inner peace and harmony by Dr Roy Martina. Listen to an interview with Dr. Martina and Yvonne Perry on We Are One in Spirit Podcast.

Roy Martina is a holistic medical doctor with over 30 years experience helping people tap into their true selves and "cure the incurable" by understanding the connection between emotional balance and dis-ease. He is the author of over 40 books in Dutch and other languages. He has spent the last 25 years studying acupuncture and numerous holistic techniques in order to offer people a profound level of healing, and he has been tireless in his pursuit of methods that work swiftly and effectively to aid the healing process. This work has put him at the leading edge of the holistic and self-help world.

A long-time bestseller in Dutch and other languages, a new English translation of the book has just been released through Hay House Publishers, and is coming to Amazon US on March 15th. You can buy the book and receive a complete library of free gifts at http://emotionalbalance.com/book.html

Emotional Balance is the result of years of empirical research. Dr Martina conducted to discover why some people heal from illness and chronic conditions while others do not, in spite of having received the best holistic medical treatments he could offer them. As he embarked on a journey to unravel the secrets of the subconscious mind and how we sabotage ourselves, he says he discovered that our unresolved emotions and conflicts in the first seven years of our lives create deeply-rooted behavioral patterns and negative beliefs that cause us to sabotage ourselves, and that these can lead to long-term patterns of rocky relationships, financial hardship and, of course, ill health.

The end product of those years of experience and research is a method Roy developed called "Emotional Balance." Roy explains, "Emotional Balance is a technique that allows us to return to what I call the 'Still Point'. The Still Point is that place within us where we are in our power and are no longer governed by our egos or our past."

Roy's book, Emotional Balance: the path to inner peace and harmony, represents a culmination of his years of research, holistic practice and teaching, and is a substantial, comprehensive manual that teaches us how to deal with our self sabotaging mechanisms and return to our still point rapidly and easily when life knocks us off balance.

I am delighted to be joining Roy in celebrating the big launch of his book. You can receive over 40 free personal development gifts when you buy the book during the launch, including one from me: The first chapter of my new book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You.

Also, as a special gift to everyone who buys the book during the launch celebration, Dr Martina will be delivering a fr*ee 2-Day course on how to use the book (to be delivered in April over the Internet), which will include time for people to ask questions directly to Roy. He is doing this because he doesn't want his book to be just another self-help book that ends up sitting on your bookshelf. He wishes everyone who buys Emotional Balance to understand how to use the tools in the book, and feel supported as they start to apply these techniques in their lives.

You can buy the book and get these gifts including the free classes from Dr Roy Martina Tuesday March 15th at http://emotionalbalance.com/book.html

Update on Empath Book Tour

Here is a list of the places we visited on the virtual tour last week:
  • Monday, March 7 - Writers will appreciate the information on Doreen Pendgracs's blog: http://doreenisthewizardofwords.blogspot.com about the "Big Six" publishing houses, the book industry's primary printer Lightning Source, and why I chose to use CreateSpace to publish my book.
  • Tuesday, March 8 - There are many easy and effective ways to control and eliminate detrimental energy and entities that may have entered your field during your workday.  I give one as an example on Nickolove Lovemore's Skyline Coaching Blog http://www.skylinecoachingblog.com/ . She also offered a video clip, an excerpt from the book, an article “Clearing Your Energy Field,” and a book review.
  • Wednesday, March 9 - Callie Carling shared a video, book review, and article about ways to identify and distinguish your own energy from that of another person. See her blog, Empowered Healer, at http://empoweredhealer.co.uk . Here is an excerpt from her book review: It was a huge relief to read through Yvonne’s wonderful book “Whose Stuff Is This?”, nodding vigorously and shedding a few tears as she bravely shared her story . . . it was just SO nice to realise that being an empath is a true gift and there ARE ways to use this amazing natural ability for good effect without being a risk to our own emotional and mental wellbeing.
  • Thursday, March 10 - If you don’t know why your mood suddenly changes from light and happy to sad when there is no reason to be sad, you don’t want to miss this informative interview on what it's like to be an untrained empath. Join me and Irene Conlan as we discuss what it means to be an empath in today’s world. We explore how to know if you are empathic and how you can protect yourself from being drained by other people's thoughts and energy. Listen to The Self Improvement Radio Show.
  • Friday, March 11 - Psychologist, Dr. Caron Goode, shares parenting tips for empathic moms and how/why we pick up so much intuitive information from our children. There's also an interview about my writing process that will interest writers and authors, who are trying to decide if writing a book is worth the effort. See Caron's blog at http://academyforcoachingparents.com
  • Saturday, March 12 - Why do caregivers burn out? Why do doctors and therapists prescribe drugs for a condition they do not recognize as empathy fatigue? Dr. Goode gives the perfect description of how an empathic person such as a healer or counselor picks up the energy of the clients they care for. Your body and mind can tell you when the session has gone on long enough and needs to end. An empath must care for her own self when trying to help others. Hear Dr. Caron Goode and Shelagh Jones' interview about the psychology of empathy. See Spiritus blog.

Self-Improvement Radio Show with Host Irene Conlan

As empaths, our journey may be to embrace, feel, and connect, but also to thrive, celebrate, and deepen awareness, not only for ourselves, but also for others with whom we are connected. But sometimes our connection attracts the negative energy of those we are trying to help.If you don’t know why your mood suddenly changes from light and happy to sad when there is no reason to be sad, you don’t want to miss this informative interview on what it's like to be an untrained empath.

Join me and Irene Conlan as we discuss what it means to be an empath in today’s world. We explore how to know if you are empathic and how you can protect yourself from the onslaught of other’s thoughts and energy. The gift of empathy can be used to help others.

"If you have mood swings that you can’t explain, become depressed when you have nothing to be depressed about, or if you know what others are feeling and thinking, you may be an empath," says Irene Conlan. "For you, this book is a must read!"

Radio Show with Dr Goode & Shelagh Jones

Why do caregivers burn out?
Why do doctors and therapists prescribe drugs for a condition they do not recognize as empathy fatigue?

Dr. Goode gives the perfect description of how an empathic person such as a healer or counselor picks up the energy of the clients they care for. Your body and mind can tell you when the session has gone on long enough and needs to end. An empath must care for her own self when trying to help others.

Learn what Dr. Goode says when asked by host Shelagh Jones @SpiritusShelagh if most doctors and therapists recognize the symptoms of compassion fatigue and what diagnosis they might give and what treatments they might suggest. I think you will find the answers very revealing in this fascinating interview with Caron, who wrote the foreword to the book, Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You at http://tinyurl.com/EmpathAmazon.
